The bill passed by the Nassau County Legislature would make police officers and other first responders a protected class under the countys Human Rights Law, which currently bars discrimination based on race, religion, gender and sexual orientation. No other professions are protected under the Human Rights Law.

Fucking moron snowflakes.

not sure how this applies. It just gives the officer a right to sue a person if they harm them, etc.. youll still have to prove a case and go to court

if you support police losing qualified immunity then you should have no problem supporting the other way. Like if a police officer is maimed or permanently injured by a citizen intentionally

Because it should be a harsher punishment for intentionally trying to hurt first responders. Medical, police, etc.. in this state it is. Any first responders, teachers, medical. Are all considered protected

Unless these officers have to pay out of pocket for those lawyer fees?

major issue is that the cop is ALWAYS going to have the backing and monetary support of the police union while the person they sue isn't.

beyond that this doesn't get rid of qualified immunity so your argument is just shit.

Except in cases like the officer in Nevada that was shot in the head by a suspect and now disabled for life. During a protest last year. The guy will go to prison for a couple years. Now his family has to pay for him the rest of his life. They should be afforded the right to pay for the care of his life that the suspect created

It's kinda hard to send a guy to prison and expect him to pay those kind of bills so which one would you prefer to have happen?

his family will pay? or will they get access to huge amounts of money afforded to police in general by organizations like the police union? i'm pretty sure its the later, something that random "suspects" that get their heads cracked by cops for no good reason and have no legal way to hold them accountable later on dont get...

Not really how it works. You should really try researching this. It will be a workers comp issue.

thats why theres an injured police officer fund group that basically works as a gofundme. Unions dont just magically have the money to pay for life care for injured officers. Unrealistic with how many officers end up inured

just a quick look up suggests over a dozen 'non profit' groups specifically to help cops injured on the job...

and the police unions dedicate huge amounts of money for legal fees associated with cops every year.

https://www.motherjones.com/crime-justice/2021/03/police-unions-have-enormous-war-chests-to-defend-officers-like-derek-chauvin/

so this would just end up another way for the rich and powerful to abuse the system against the poor.

Inmates can be made to pay restitution. Aint likely gonna get much out of them a month but yeah. I know some inmates that probably got more money on their books than some of the posters here. Think ive seen 5-7k but have heard of some with more.

The bill would allow a lawyer for the Long Island county to sue protesters on behalf of officers and calls for fines of up to $25,000 for anyone who harasses, menaces or injures an officer. The fine amount would be doubled if the offending behavior happened in the course of participating in a riot, the bill says.
Depending on how it's written, that's probably overbroad and will be found unconstitutional (we'll see, with this court).
Big difference between protecting individual officers from harm and protecting the government from criticism.

It is, but I'm also not really understanding what prevents them from personally suing someone under the current laws if that's what they want to do. If someone intentionally injures you, you dont have to be a protected class to sue them

Basically it just sounds like they want to give the county the ability to financially ruin people in addition to the felony charge you already get for assaulting a police officer

Can't say for sure but maybe just preventing a possible defense of "you signed up for the job you knew the risks"

Also I'm thinking it might be in hopes more people simply comply instead of getting difficult with the cops. People get difficult shit escalates shit happens cops end up looking bad.

This law specifically targets "harassment" of police during protests and doesn't seem to have a whole lot to do with general compliance. It's also worth noting that this is being proposed in the wake of massive protests that were protesting the police. By the wording of the law, every one of those protesters were "harassing" police. I use quotes because it's such a vague term. Theoretically you could be fined $25k for yelling at a cop during a protest.

That is literally something made available through the standard trial process. Nothing about this is necessary; the whole thing is meant to provide a complete redundant penalty.
