Does it ever get easier? Like do you feel a sense of progression and levelling up, or is it just a hard slogfest all the way through until you reach the end and slump over the controller?

I keep toying with the idea of getting into the series but don't know if I have it in me

yes. it gets much easier. the difficultly is mostly just getting used to the controls and exploring areas/bosses for the first time.

It only gets easier, both by leveling up and upgrading and just naturally getting good

You can over level and become op. The starts of the games are usually the hardest bit

all from software games have steep learning curves and while the enemies and bosses get tougher, it does get easier as you level up and get the hang of the game.

Yes, you do get stronger and can get quite a few benefits from good gear, rings in particular

Just getting better at the game goes a long way too. I know "git gud" is a meme and all but it does apply. The games become significantly easier as you understand their mechanics and enemy attack patterns

The hardest part is early on. You can barely dodge and swing your weapon more than two times. You die in like 3 hit
As you level up and get more health and get more stamina so you can attack abs dodge more it gets more tolerable.

Dark souls 1 and 2 are the easiest due to being able to farm for extra heals and also just upgrade to 20 heals early in on ds1, ds2 just let's you buy up to 99 heals at once. I think demon souls let's you buy healing grass early on.

the levels are pretty minor; the bigger thing is just getting a grip on the controls and mechanics, or learning about mob attack patterns and locations. Getting a little more Str and a good shield, or lifting ability and stamina for quick and repeatable rolling also make a pretty big difference.

It's not a hard slogfest, it's a game you haven't played before. You're allowed to be new and struggle because of it.

For making it easier you have learning enemies, overlevelling, knowing where to get good weapons/busted abilities early, optimal routes to take, AI exploitation (the limits of how far they can follow you, walking them off cliffs, getting them to commit to slow animations) and all that stuff.

It's a matter of gitting gud. Which is a meme answer, but it's actually the correct answer. My first few playthroughs I was totally dependent on my shield. Which turned battles into a slow defensive slog, and made things really tough end game when I had to fight more aggressive bosses that didn't give me time to build stamina to both block and attack.

Then something clicked and i dropped my shield and started two-handing and got better at rolling and the game is basically a breeze now.
