Our baby: oh, I don't think so.

He only sleeps if you hold him. Put him in his crib and he throws a fit. And all the rules around safe sleeping are making me wonder if people threw knives in the bed with their kids wtf how did humankind survive this long?

My condolences

It gets better. Eventually.

Its okay to let the baby fuss a bit to settle itself. It may cry when you put it down, but if youve fed it and changed it and burped it then it doesnt really need anything else.

set it down in the crib and leave the room. Let it cry until it falls asleep.

This. I know it's hard but you have to let the baby cry.

After a while you'll be able to tell what's a "I pooped myself" cry or an "I'm hungry" cry or a "hold me please" cry or a "holy shit I really need you right now " cry.

Have you invested in one of those automatic rockers?

Sometimes you have to let your baby cry

I know it sounds horrible and counterproductive but if you never put the baby down because it cries, then the baby has learned to never stop crying unless you hold it

Make sure its fed and changed and warm and everything obviously

But your baby is going to cry, its going to happen

Doctors: we have no idea why sids happen.
Also doctors: here's a long list of rules that the baby will definitely not follow but it'll maybe kinda probably prevent SIDS who knows?????

You mean those SIDS baby death machines? Yes we have two. But we're still at the hospital so we don't have it.

It took my wife and I a long time to give in and let our first baby cry herself to sleep one night. We had a video monitor and she cried for like an hour. My wife may have cried for longer than that. It was absolute torture.

I remember one time my co-worker brought in doughnuts and said it was to celebrate the first time their baby slept through the night.
The baby was 14 months old...

How'd it go on subsequent nights? We're lucky that all three of our babies were great sleepers for the most part

I can't recall specifically but I believe it was still difficult for a week or so after but not nearly as difficult as that first night.

Eventually she started sleeping on her own or playing until she fell asleep.

There are cultures which do not leave a baby to cry and they grow up all right. One that I read about was documented a long, long time ago. I think that it was in Africa. I cannot find the study but here is an anecdotal report which may help.

I think either way works for the baby but do what works for you. Holding the baby is known to stimulate brain growth so ...

Just know, this lack of sleep is very common. There's nothing wrong with you guys being protective and wanting to hold the baby constantly and make sure nothing happens. We were insanely protective of our first to the point if my wife was the only one home and she had to go to the bathroom, she'd hold it until someone else was nearby.

It's hard being a parent. You're doing a great job. You're just going to be really tired for a while.

my strategy to get enough sleep along with the wife was for me to stay awake at night and take care of the babys needs while she slept, shed wake up at around 5-6 AM and Id go to bed then and sleep till 1-2 PM, worked quite well with both kids we have

also people who are advocating letting the baby cry, I think its fine but at least from what my wife had researched it was better to go gradually about it, so let the baby cry 5 minutes the first time, 10 minutes the 2nd time, 15 minutes 3rd time etc.

we also let them sleep alone in their room fairly early (had that monitor thing obv) si they get used to it and my wife and I get to keep our intimacy and sex life doesnt go to shit for years
