it does stop the download mid way to install a lot tho. So itll download one thing, install, then start downloading agian

Protip: Try to make your character on a preferred server, you get a 90 day +100% exp boost, it's insane how quick you level.

EDIT: And if a preferred server isn't available for new characters, wait a few minutes, refresh the list and see if one opens up, had to do this a few times but I got in one

I'm downloading FFXII off of Game Pass, only FF game I ever played was 7, tried 8 and hated it and never touched another one. It's free and i'm kind of in the mood for a RPG so i'm gonna try it for an hour and likely hate it but we'll see.

Are they new or empty servers? I made that mistake with WoW and don't wanna repeat it.

Not sure if I care too much about overleveling though. I keep hearing how good the story is in this game, don't want to overlevel it.

None of the servers are empty, in fact they all quite full at the moment due to the influx of new players. Also, you can visit servers on the fly if your friend is on another one. Currently as long as they're in the same "datacenter" (group of servers), but they're working on making cross datacenter play happen. Groupfinder (matchmaking for dungeons and raids) pulls from a pool of players across the datacenter as well.

EDIT: And you won't overlevel due to the game syncing your level to content, but it will allow you to level up multiple classes more easily which is what i'm doing. I leveled a ninja to 80 by playing the MSQ through Stormblood, and now i'm leveling a red mage to play through shadowbringers. Also the level boost helps quite a bit with your non combat job leveling (fishing, gathering, crafting, ect..). It just gives you a nice head start to catch up with legacy players

The cross-server stuff sounds like WoW, but that didn't really stop the world from feeling empty as hell. Apparently grouping isn't quite as important in this game, but I'd still like to see some people.

Though I might not since I work nights and end up playing games at like four in the morning.

again, none of the servers are empty. they're so full, in fact, that they need to spin more up to accommodate the influx of new players

The consensus on reddit is that aether has the best raiding scene, crystal is the RP datacenter, primal is more of a casual/normie one.

Aether is usually home to the top tier NA players, with some stragglers on primal

Crystal is where you go when you don't actually wanna play the game anymore and wanna just sit on balmung erping with dudes playing catgirls

i'm on balmung, not really. i only really see tons of catgirls and bunny girls in the ERP den, otherwise i see a lot of the other races... i guess because people roleplay as them more often instead of picking what looks cool

This doesn't do anything your progress is limited by msqs. You could start at level 60 and it would roughly take the same length

you make great points . i did not think of alts.

It's nice to be able to swap between different gameplay styles depending on your mood imo, the job system in FFXIV makes this super easy to do with just the leveling being the barrier. This is doubly true if you want a tank/dps/healer job available

I was going to play a little bit, but then I took an hour to make a character. It's one of the dragon dudes. I like the horns and tail, but I'm not crazy about the face scales. I'm a little worried it'll mess with cosmetics like virtually all the non-human races in WoW.

Picked thaumaturge to start with, mostly because I liked that outfit the most.

you can't pick a wrong class, they're all viable and incredibly well balanced

don't be afraid to try different ones to see what their playstyle is like, they all vary wildly

Careful with going to Limsa Lominsa. That city state has been totally overrun with players recently. Even Ul'dah has had a huge boost in population on my server.

Oh yeah, and the Gold Saucer is packed at certain times because of the event.

There aren't. They have been gone for a week or so I think. It's due to the influx of new players and the fact that there aren't any dead/new servers now.

As far as what server to play on, if you haven't already selected I used this when I was trying to pick one.

Your topic is what got me to start it lol. I'd thought about it for a while just because I was looking for something to play while watching TV or something.

So far it seems pretty much like WoW. Arguably less story to start with, but I can't help but do every disconnected side quest I find.
