I believe the Heavens Arena arc explains it still in the anime. It is a lot to memorize but youll get it eventually.

I believe they did spout something like ten zetsu ren en wen and what not in that arc

It was really basic shit but togashi just wanted to make it a bit more complicated

It's not even complicated. It's just a classification system as Nen users can conjure any kind of ability they want... according to their affinity for the nitpickers, but which one is written; first the ability or the affinity?.

It would be more accessible if one of the 5 categories wasn't "It can do whatever the fuck the author wants it to do".

It's one of those things that matters a lot up front and does tie into more complicated moves, but which specific thing is being invoked becomes less important over time.

Like, once you know there's one form that involves concentrating it on a part of your body and another form that involves suppressing it entirely you don't really need the series to call it out every time it's done.

DBZ ki is probably one of the most boring power systems. Pretty much everything that comes from it is functionally the same, except like 3 things.

Well yes. Uvogin was arrogant and cocky towards Kurapika. Uvo didnt know wether his chains were conjured or real ones being manipulated. That led to his death.

If he had used Gyo he would have been able to determine what the chains were immediately. So yeah, that one nen ability could have saved his life.

Which is great.

Don't gotta memorize the different Chakra releases or different elements of chakra(a subject that got dropped quickly), how spiritual pressure works, how this energy system works, or that one, or this new one.

It's simple, and gets thrown aside to let the story shine. Ki is your health. Stronger you are, stronger your ki.

You want to become a nuke? Nothing stopping you. You can come up with any idea, just toss in a couple "draw backs" to make it balanced and say that the character has an affinity for it and you're good to go.

But its already been established that no one can make an unbreakable chain in hxh world. Reason why uvo couldnt break the chain is because the chain forced the victim in perpetual state of zetsu giving the illusion of unbreakable chain based on how awesome uvogin feat was while fighting the ten beast. Thanks to kurapika's eye, he was able to override some of the restriction imposed by his oath that specifically target the genei ryodan. Thats doubly true when it comes to one particular chain called judgement chain that effectively rendered any nen-users incapable of using his nen at all as seen as kuroro lucifer primarily.

No, Ki isn't life force. It's energy. Genki is life force. There's a big difference between the two in DBZ.

Never read the English version but it sounds like a case of not bothering to translate things.

has the four subtypes of , , , and with the kanji telling you what they do pretty intuitively. So yeah if you just leave the terms in Japanese for audiences that don't know it, I imagine it's hard.

They're all using readings derived from Chinese (this is common in Japanese martial arts). The Japanese readings for Chinese are extremely limited due to the small range of sounds in Japanese (among the smallest of any language in existance) and lack of tones. Combine that with the one syllable per character standard in Chinese and you don't just end up with a lot of words sounding similar, but literally having the same pronunciation. (among others) are all pronounced shin when using the Chinese pronunciation in Japanese. The language continues to use Chinese characters for a reason (to tell words that sound the same apart).

It also leads to characters getting sidelined due to power creep. At least with the way nen works, weaker characters can still be relevant.

For the purposes against the Phantom Troupe Kurapika made an unbreakable chain against them. I suppose I'm being slightly disingenuous but from the stand point of the author, he can create literally any tool he wants and it'll be accepted within the laws of Nen for the scenario he prepares. Contrast this to Attack on Titan where a titan who has the ability to summon meteors from the sky would be out of place with the lore established of the series. This is why I'm not at all impressed with Nen.
