This is my exact opinion about the game. Had it when I was a kid, I had a lot of fun with it, but I can understand why it's a pretty mediocre game

I don't think that's going to happen, now that it's owned by screen wave media. Mike Matei isn't even involved anymore.

Some of his VERY early stuff, when he actually had some passion, and was blatantly ripping off Seanbabys material, was decent. He got way too gimmicky, and hes not anywhere near as good of a storyteller or comedian as he thinks he is, if he just stuck with the reviews, it would have been better.

Also, a character like that has a shelf life, and its long since expired.

AVGN went down hill when The Nerd started dreaming of making an actual film. Rather than channeling that energy into his show (like he always did) he actually diverted the energy into side projects that left his bread and butter AVGN lacking in many ways since even before Mike left. (TBH, I was never a fan of Mike, too arrogant and egotistical for me to enjoy his play throughs)

I think AVGN should continue spot lighting historical games, but maybe move away from the "bad ones" and just show case games that interest him (in full detail+skits) rather than these 10 minute filler episodes he keeps putting out.

What episode do you guys think the AVGN started to get bad? In other words what episode did you watch that made you realize "oh, this is getting bad"?

I would say probably the episode where the director made a guest appearance, and he was making appropriate jokes. It wasn't funny, it was cringe-worthy.

About the time he did that awful christmas episode where he wrecked the house. That was around the same time he opted to (instead of doing skits and reviews) post a screenshot of a game (out of 10 or so that he planned to show for that episode) and then would talk about said game for about a minute and a half, before moving on. I think it was like the 15 shitty games of christmas or something.

The compilations was a cop out for writer's block, so he took all his unfinished projects (at the time) and made them into like a 3 part shitty episode.

Am I the only one who saw the "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" episode on casino games??? It was great. James still has it, he's just older now and has his priorities in different places.

Shit, Im getting a kick out of that "Rex Viper" band he has going on now.

And oh... He's bringing back the October Monster Madness. It's going to be great.

I just got done watching the Pac-Man 2 review. Holy fuck it's short. He covered a lot of the very basic points about the game, but he missed so many details. Not that it matters, but he could have talked about how you can piss pacman off if you keep hitting him with a slingshot, or how you can play the original pacman in the arcade, or all the cool interactive stuff you can do. I understand that AVGN is meant to be more entertainment rather than an actual review, but a newbie would barely learn anything about the game by watching that video.

Couldn't stand Mike either. Talk about a leech. Enjoyed the first 100 or so episodes though. It was just over the top of enough to be hilarious without trying too hard. Haven't watched a new ep since I forgot when.

I had fun with Pacman 2 as well...but eh, it was a fun idea but all in all too hard to control. Maybe a 5/10 game.

I do think screenwave media has been a positive influence on James. Wasn't he overworked prior to them being involved? And I'm sure their help with writing and stuff probably has been a huge mental relief on James. And there have been a couple decent episodes, like the mortal kombat game boy games.

I like the game but it's basically unplayable.

Sonic R is not a good game but it's at least playable.

The show has always been hit or miss, and even recent episodes I have felt have been worth the watch half the time. Same as it goes with the old ones, though more of them are hits for me. James has aged, and the video format has aged.

You could tell that Mike wished the show was about him. I found his on-screen personality annoying but he's been there from the beginning and his fingerprint was on everything... he helped James with a lot of the production of the show, and the reason he was in front of the camera to begin with besides a few characters on AVGN, because they needed extra content to pad the channel in between episodes...

I wonder how that "streaming career" is treating him to be honest.

I agree that times do change, and you do have to adapt to that change. You could say that about The Simpsons too. If you've seen my complaints about avgn, I never complain about his expressvpn advertising or anything, because that's just how it is now. But I personally see a drop in quality overall.

Eh, he probably just wanted to wrap it up so he could focus on "Monster Madness" which is starting soon. I wonder how it will be this year with the Screenwave guys.

I used to love his Monster Madness more than anything else so I hope it's good this year.

I think James lost his passion but only reason he may be doing this because of the contract. Either way his latest stuff just hasn't been fun to watch anymore, loved his early work though.
