I downloaded it to be ready.

Seems to be a full fledged nier game but with turn based battles. Visually it looks great, and the music sounds amazing(as is expected), I'm just curious how the MTX will factor in. It's a single player game, but is f2p.

I have no idea, I literally just learned of it today and decided to look it up. The Japanese version is out so all the footage is of that, English version is tomorrow. It does look like a full fledged nier game with story, music, all of it, just with turn based battles which I assume use characters from the series obtained via gacha means. It's a mobile game.

Digging deeper, yoko taro isn't involved with this like he was with sinoalice, but has some of the squeenix devs from the other two games. Same composer and character artist too.

The game looks interesting from that video I linked, it entirely depends on how the gacha shit is. If it's not super required to enjoy the story, then fine, but if you gotta spend to progress, fuck that shit. Japan seems to dig them game, but they love gacha stuff so that's not saying much.

Kinda hoping it goes the way of Another Eden. It was a pretty dope single player gacha game though it was pretty slow in it's gameplay and the actual gaining of pull currency was slow.

I have done all the content in the Japanese version (the first season just finished). I think the story is pretty good and it's very easy to play for free (I never spent anything and just did the daily stuff and events). The gameplay is boring, but that's how mobile games are and you can automate the whole thing (though some automations are rewards for finishing quests).

The reason I have so much currency is because once you have a set of maxed out four star memories there isn't really anything to do with it. I also have enough gacha currency to do 900 pulls currently. No incentive to use any of it because I already have multiple S-tier characters. The stuff you really want, things that let you limit break the level cap on characters and weapons, cannot be bought or farmed. It has to be earned through events. There are also a variety of materials you use to upgrade skills and bring weapons up to five star, but you will have way more of all of those then you could ever possibly use, so they become useless quickly after you max everything out.

Oh yeah there are two things you can grind. Guaranteed five star weapons are earned through the story but require a ton of grinding to upgrade (but they are as good as the best gacha weapons, some are among the best in the game). You also have otomo, which are like the pod or book in the NieR games. These are useful, but require insane amount of grinding to upgrade. I didn't bother with either because I don't want to grind and didn't need to in order to do all the content (even the hard and expert content).

That's good to hear. The story and music would be the main reason to play this for me, so the fact you can experience that without being hampered by gacha stuff is great.

There is no story material locked behind the expert stuff, and the hard stuff only gives you a small short story after finishing all of them for one chapter. The main story and all events can be easily cleared with whatever random shit you get the day you start the game.

The only connections to those games are the crossover limited time events. And those short stories have (so far) been adapted from actual short stories already released in other formats (in Japan anyway, I read them in one of my NieR books before anyway). The connection is more in theme than anything. Also we had a Drag-On Dragoon 3 crossover, so that was cool. Hoping we see events not related to NieR at all eventually.

I was looking forward to this game, and I've played gatcha games in the past, but jesus is the game both incredibly boring AND needlessly complicated right out of the gate. Maybe I'm just going to have to wait for a lore video or something, because I don't know if I can do it.

So, I adore the quests, with the side scrolling bits and narration and art style, it's welk done. There is a major melancholy vibe in this game. It's very morose, I can only play for a bit at a time.

The music is outstanding too.

Also, I agree, the actual gameplay elements are very fucking confusing, like in the menus and stuff.

It's one of the more painful reroll processes because the tutorial is kind of long and you have to delete your games data to reset. So even with auto run enabled you're looking at probably 2 minutes per attempt, and you'll have to pay attention so you can skip cutscenes, and it's about 200 MB of content to download each try.

It's going to be easier now than later though. Right now the pre-reg bonuses get you a 10 roll right out of the tutorial by collecting your gift box. Without them you would probably have to play through most of chapter one to get the rewards you need to even give it a shot.

Maybe I'm just spoiled by newer games. The disgaea mobile game literally just lets you reroll until you get what you want as part of the tutorial. It's a shame every other aspect of that game was a horrible, soul-crushing grind.

You have weapon types and elements, character elements, and each character has 3 weapon slots, a doll slot, and 3 memory slots, so optimizing is going to be a pain.
THEN you have character level, and character ascension, but also individual character skill levels which is different from weapon skill levels which change depending on what you have equipped.
Then weapons can also be upgraded and ascended, as well as dolls and memories, and all these things down to weapon type require different materials to do so.
Then on top of that you have like 6 types of tokens right out of the gate which is different from the premium currency which itself different from paid premium currency.

For a mobile game at launch, the amount of individual items that can be levelled/upgraded/ascended is kind of overwhelming and team composition is going to be way more complicated than just "which 3 characters do I want to use".

I almost never do anything other than hitting recommended and then picking the element that's best for a given quest. Also nothing outside of expert quests needs anything approaching optimization. Peope saw my screenshot earlier right? I free play and have more max level characters and weapons than I could ever need, more money than I could ever use, and a shit ton of mats, memories, otomo, etc. Yeah it's six months from launch for me, but I have also done all the content in the game. You don't need any of that stuff to just do the story. Pick the recommended element (which is conveniently a listed mission for every quest) and let the optimizer do the rest. Use materials on your 4 star characters and weapons as you get them (memories as well, but you don't start with those unlocked and they primarily drop from events).
