Generally I like Woolsey's translation better.

I can't really blame him for the censorship.

Ayla is supposed to be bisexual, and that's the biggest problem with Woolsey's translation. If you read a fan translation of that part, you are pretty much good to go.

It's also not a huge deal to understand than the "Milk Pubs" and such is alcohol.

The new translation deserves credit for Ayla's sexuality, but the rest of it is so fucking stupid that it's not even worth it.

EDIT: there is a fan translation guide on GameFAQs that makes playing the SNES version the most desirable choice.

The SNES version in general is overall the better version anyway. The extra shit in the DS version is utter trash and kinda detracts from how good the main game is by comparison lol

only neat thing the DS version did was that extra ending that bridged the gap between CT and CC, with the Magus scene. i remember my heart sinking when i realized most of the bonus content was MMO-style fetch quests, doesn't exactly work well in CT. the translation was kinda bland and that's all i really remember about it

always wondered if he spoke differently in the JP version too. i dunno if Japanese has a direct equivalent of Early Modern English, which was a weird historical quirk, or if they just wrote his dialogue in katakana instead of hiragana, though idk if that would have the same connotation. maybe the super formal polite conjugations/not dropping subjects or verbs or whatever? pretty ignorant of Japanese

He actually sort of does. Not in an "old world" sense, but his grammar and honorifics of choice are excruciatingly polite and deferential compared to basically every other character in the game. For the translators, the best way they could figure to carry that over was to make him a stereotypical chivalrous knight, early modern lingo and all.

Aside from how Frog speaks, I didn't know there were any differences honestly. Granted, it's not a game I've played a lot.

It's been close to 15 years since I played the DS version, so I can't remember many particulars and my opinion might be different if I ever replayed it. But I couldn't bring myself to finish a playthrough on it, and that was largely due to disappointment over the lifeless retranslation; at the time I considered it the poster child for the growing trend of being overly correct / literal at the cost of a game's soul. (The nail in the coffin was that atrocious path-building sidequest between Prehistory and the Middle Ages that felt like the worst parts of the Northern Ruins stretched out far past the breaking point).

The one example that stood out for me was how they changed Slash from an affable punk into a generic effete British swordsman. I always got the feeling that Ozzie, Slash, and Flea were named for the rock icons of the same name, and in the SNES version they had the irreverent attitudes to match. It was anachronisms like this and many others that gave CT and other games of that era their charm; it was cool and unique that Magus (who we later learn started out as little more than a spoiled fish-out-of-water brat) managed to cobble together a ragtag band of mystic punks and turn them into the most feared military force of the Middle Ages.

It should also be said that I felt the homogenization of replacing several weapon and armor names with their Final Fantasy equivalents was also disappointing, and completely unnecessary.

That article presents some of the stuff, but vastly misinterprets the dialogue.

It fails to take into account the Lucca stuff also. Lucca comes across as "denying too much" that she'd be into Ayla and it comes across as bi-curious.

Woolsey understands this when he's making his translation and tries to keep the spirit of it (characters being surprised by this crazy cavewoman unbound by traditional societal morals).

It also make sense. We know without society people are more likely to be queer or embrace it. Bisexuals wouldn't see the need to mask their sexuality.

Mostly the writer of the article doesn't understand how fucking closeted the 1990s were as well as how subtle Japanese people are going to be about sexuality.

Metal Gear Solid 2, for example, got a "Sexual Themes" tag for simply having a bisexual character (nothing sexual is discussed in the game).

Same-sex marriage is still illegal in Japan today (although their Legislature has been ordered by the courts to make it legal very soon). We think of all the hentai and whatever, but they are still puritanical (just not about nudity).

As a person who lived through the 90s there is 0% doubt in my mind what the writers were trying to do with Ayla (queerbait, toe-the-line, and provide deniability to people who demand every character be straight) and what Woolsey was trying to do.
