LatinX

Hey, I was curious what CE thinks about this term.

I get emails from my university about attending LatinX diversity groups. I, myself, am half hispanic and find the term relatively ridiculous, to the point where I do not attend diversity groups because of this term. My hispanic friends also agree, and think that the term amounts to white women telling hispanic people to speak their language. In other words, it's cultural imperialism.

Our arguments:

You cannot pronounce the world in Spanish. It is clear that the word has been derived in an English speaking environment, among English speaker and is for English speakers.

Second, the word it is replacing is a Spanish word. Hispanic people saying Latino are speaking Spanish. They aren't speaking English, and having English speakers trying to tell Spanish speakers to modify their language is not really appropriate. Hispanic people don't tell Americans to change their language because it doesn't align with their politics.

Third: Spanish male/female word roots is just part of the language. You can't change this.

Curious where CE lies on this matter. Hispanic issues arent discussed lately, but they are still important.

You aren't exactly being more inclusive by trampling on one of the basic properties of the Spanish language. Just say Latino/Latinos (which is all-encompassing) and move on with your life.

Yeah we've all heard the insanity that tries to defend this. It isn't sticking. Also the majority of Hispanic people do not prefer the term, and consider it highly offensive.

It really doesn't matter if it was 'invented' by a hispanic person or a white person (often both are the same), it is used by white people and only by white people predominantly in academic social circles. It isn't catching on. It's forced, and embarrassing to see

Nope. Every latino academic I know (many of whom were born and raised in latin america) uses it. But not sure why someone who's clearly never set foot in the academy thinks his opinions mean shit lol

I don't care about every academic you know. (I also wouldnt call an "academic advisor" to really be an academic) Basic polling shows that hispanic people do not approve of the term or do not use it. It is also everywhere

https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/story/2020-08-11/latinx-pew-poll-latino-hispanic-identity

https://www.pewresearch.org/hispanic/2020/08/11/about-one-in-four-u-s-hispanics-have-heard-of-latinx-but-just-3-use-it/

I am also a male nurse and med student at UVA. I am more educated than you.

As I'm sure you know, hispanic is often a nebulous identity that encompasses entirely Caucasian people and various different shades. Many Latino academics are 'white-passing', largely because skin color dictates how successful we are in both American and Latino socities. The lighter, the better.

It is because of this, the only people who tend to use the term are light-skinned persons in academic settings. They are educated, and a largely separate population with different problems and goals than mexican migrant farmer in California. They don't speak Spanish predominantly in the settings they work, and race generally hasnt something they struggle with as often. These individuals focus more on gender isses, sexual identity issues, and that's fine. Just understand that the general hispanic population might not approve of certain behaviors and ideals they are relevant in academic social circles. LatinX is offensive to the vast majority of Hispanic people, and it just shouldn't be used.

I'm an instructor at my university and in the last semester of my MA. In any case, I don't believe you for a second because no nurses I know have time to shitpost on dying video game message boards all the time about how minorities upset them. And your previous statement about advisors really makes me believe you've never actually set foot in a university.

None of the ones I know are. You cry about me using anecdotes from my colleagues yet keep coming up with anecdotes and vague statements of your own. The people I have in mind are very dark-skinned, and most have worked very hard to get where they are; please, go tell them they're privileged and white-passing, they'd get a fucking laugh out of that.

But I know I'm feeding a blatant troll, given your posting history.

Lmao, you're white. Why are you always posting this defensive and sheltered nonsense every single time this topic comes up despite tons of Hispanic people stating their uncomfortability with it?

No, it's not just Latino academics that use it. You're just telling on yourself by constantly repeating that, completely ignoring the increasing usage in media and advertising, the corporate world, and many other things. Your anecdotal experience in your small bubble is meaningless. I doubt you even talk to many people with your anger issues.

Many of us don't like this label the way it's growing in use, especially by profit driven assholes and white people. It's fine if people themselves want to identify as that. But the "Hispanic community" or "Latino community" in the past now regularly becoming the "Latinx community" will have people feel it's imposing no matter the intention. This is not hard to understand.
