Nah gen x music is where its at. There is plenty of shit since then that's good but I remain convinced Freddy Mercury will go down at least in the top 5 vocalists of that century of not number 1

From 2015-on? I'm not sure. no one?

90s has a solid repetoire though. Not sure who from the 00s will survive. White Stripes, Audioslave, idk who else.

But like mitch hedberg, all we need is an untimely death to make us all appreciate an artist WAY MORE than we ever did when they were alive.

Used to hate the older stuff. Then I matured and realise just how amazing a sizeable portion of it is: The Beatles, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Small Faces, The Monkees, Jimi Hendrix, The Temptations, Martha Vandella, Van Morrison, etc. etc.

What does this "matured" thing mean? Always hear people say that but it doesnt ring a bell to me at 30.
If anything, what i actually realized is that a lot of the music thats discarded as immature by those "mature" types has a lot of worth beyond the surface level and actually got more relevant with age, while all the old stuff remained as unrelatable as ever. Not that its necessarily bad, but just extremely overrated in its scope of being the "life's music" or whatever they bring up when discussing it.

It means that you can take things - and appreciate them - for what they are without having any preconcieved notions anymore. More open to ideas, believes et al, just ignoring all types of peer pressure and and not being critcal just to antagonize. It's like not trying to be contentious for the sake of it, or knowing when you can't change someone's incorrect views and just leaving them to wallow in their ignorance rather than stress yourself out trying to make them see reason.

I mean its the Beatles; its not about sales who gives a fuck about that, its that theyve influenced more musicians and artists than any other act within a century and its not even close. Its like comparing how far away the moon is from us to how far away alpha centauri is. I dont think theyre overrated in that sense. Whenever someone says the Beatles are overrated I ask alright well name a song as good as Let it be. Half the time they say nothing, quarter of the time they name off garbage and I can safely ignore anything they have to say about songwriting and composition, or they name a great song. Then its perfect, that person/band wrote a great song. Now realize the Beatles have 30 others just as great if not more

People can have opinions but if its a musician or a songwriter I can safely put them in a mental folder of this person dont know nooooooothin about writin tunes. Doesnt mean Ill trash em or anything or be petty but I dont have to take em seriously after that

I can think of tons of old music that's good and/or relatable though. Mind you, I don't think old music is inherently better... but I feel anyone who can't find something that moves them in someway isn't really trying, or has some weird hangup were they really don't want to listen to their parents music.

Thats the exact thought process i went through, except for another type of music and while i didnt outright dismiss it, i did realize it takes actual life experience to relate to some of the undertones beyond the surface level of just "this rocks" or "yeah this is proper heavy/technical" or whatever. But i cant say the same for older rock/guitar music. It can be argued that all generations of bands wrote songs that cover and relate to a specific emotion, its just that its the heavier stuff that matches my cravings of emotional impact.

I cant understand it when a band is singing about some dark/sad/important/whatever topic and musically all you hear is neutral elevator music that has been outmatched in its dynamic nuance long ago. And its not about just being heavy. Post-rock for example is a relatively mellow genre in its sonic aggression, but its never dull or neutral, its always emotionally impactful and atmospheric. Thats exactly the properties that older rock lacks in my opinion. Its all very neutral.

In my experience, most of the people who say modern music is awful are:

1) Generalizing and are really only referring to the front-and-center of modern music (artists who get the most playtime), not understanding that a lot of "modern" music is extremely well written and produced

2) Unaware of what they're talking about (some arguments can be made for certain artists, absolutely. But it all comes down to opinion, which a lot of the time in my experience, boils down to "Nah they just suck, I don't have an informed opinion why, they just suck"

3) Those that have really limited taste in music

all IMO of course
