Remember that your camera is a physical object and so it can get stuck against walls and stuff. Then also remember that it is only an issue in a few areas of the game cause most of it is reasonably open space.

It does though. The joystick is relative to Mario's position to the camera.

Therefore. If the camera is directly behind him, he's easier to move left or right.

However, say Mario rounds a bend in the slide, the camera will not automatically reposition itself behind him.

Tap the R button to toggle views, sometimes it will position itself behind Mario.

On topic, can we talk about how revolutionary Mario 64 is? No other game like it had ever been released before. It changed the entire landscape of the video game world and made it better just by existing.

Mario Sunshine is better though.

It has been a while, but I am pretty sure it always works the same. Left moves mario to the left of the screen, right moves him towards the right of the screen, up moves him towards the top of the screen and down moves him to the bottom of the screen. So just ignore the camera and steer mario to whatever part of the screen you need him to be going towards. Having the camera change too much makes it easier to mess up because the only time things get weird is when the camera changes massively and the stuff that was say on the left of the screen is now on the top.

And you are trying to deliberately do that. So now after that curve, instead of mario facing right or whatever you are trying to change the camera so he's facing forward again.

This is true.

The N64 version on CRT is a much more enjoyable experience than playing on Switch. I 120 stars back to back and I had to play much slower on Switch to feel in control. The whole acceleration curve is totally fucked, plus the extra couple frames of input delay.
