Getting my first big boi PC (I don't know shit about PC hardware) in the mail in the next few days but I only got a 1tb SSD (WD Blue SN550 Series PCIe NVMe M.2) with it. Looking to have some more storage before it gets here. Will be doing some video editing (mostly working with HD, maybe some 4K eventually) and gaming on it.

My motherboard is an Asrock Z590 Phantom Gaming 4/AC.

hoth fuck off shilling that useless piece of trash

TC, why do you want an SSD over a regular HDD? An SSD usually tops out at 2TB for about $200
Your 1TB SSD should be fine.

If you're just looking for storage, you might want to just get an internal HDD for that and save your SSD for your OS and whatever games you're currently playing. You'll pay way less for WAY more space and given you do video editing you'll need as much space as you can afford.

Looks like that motherboard only supports the single M.2 SSD, but you can get up to six SATA 2.5" SSDs or 3.5" mechanical Hard Drives.

Just to add onto what this poster said, m.2 SSDs are much, much faster. But you won't really notice that much of a speed increase. We're talking maybe waiting 12 seconds instead of 10 for your computer to boot.

This is really only the case until Direct Storage gets implementation in the future. It will be a big deal for gaming.

I personally have been very happy with my Samsung 970. Definitely can recommend that, but if you want more nVME drives you'll need a new mobo

I'm thinking of getting an HDD for archiving completed projects too, and eventually something external whenever I get a proper laptop. I'm under the assumption that an SSD would dramatically increase speeds in my video editing program but I could be wrong.

Again I don't know shit about hardware. I've been working on the worst laptops ever my whole life waiting hours for things to export.

HDDs are slow and have spinning parts. Like a record player. So it takes a lot longer to read/write data.
SSDs (sata) are much faster. m.2 ones are faster still.

You can also get a usb-c external SSD which is portable obviously.
Most laptops have usb-c and your motherboard has it.

I'd definitely recommend you buy some sort of HDD, even fi it's an external one over HDD for storage.

Reading through the pdf for this motherboard and it is confusing as shit. So if I put a m.2 nvme ssd in it, it disables another slot or something? Is that a regular thing?

6 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s Connectors, support RAID (RAID 0,
RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 10, Intel Rapid Storage Technology
18), NCQ, AHCI and Hot Plug*
* If M2_2 is occupied by a SATA-type M.2 device, SATA3_1 will
be disabled.
* If M2_2 is occupied by a PCIe-type M.2 device, SATA3_0 will
be disabled.
* If M2_3 is occupied by a SATA-type M.2 device, SATA3_2 will
be disabled.
1 x Hyper M.2 Socket (M2_1), supports M Key type
2260/2280 M.2 PCI Express module up to Gen4x4 (64 Gb/s)
(Only supported with 11th Gen Intel CoreTM Processors)**
1 x Ultra M.2 Socket (M2_2), supports M Key type 2260/2280
M.2 SATA3 6.0 Gb/s module and M.2 PCI Express module
up to Gen3 x4 (32 Gb/s)**
1 x Ultra M.2 Socket (M2_3), supports M Key type

Because video files are large. So are video game downloads. I have filled a 1 and 2 TB SSD.

TC what you need is a bunch of large HDDs. Probably 8TB. After that they get prohibitive in cost.

8tb HDD seems pretty affordable. I'll go with that too. I need to do more research on this motherboard tho don't want to buy something then it wont work cuz I have other shit in it. Argh.

If its for archiving consider getting a cheap NAS so you can run the disks in a RAID config. I lost about 500GB of old family photos and videos etc because I only had it on one disk and it died.

It's if you get an m.2 drive in the form of sata, then that port is disabled.

those are rare tho

Yes. You have 3 M.2 slots, and 6 SATA slots. Your main M.2 slot is "free" to use. But every additional M.2 you put in will steal the function of a different SATA port.

I don't think you should run into any problems, personally. If you were for some reason the type of person to drop in 3 M.2 Cards and 4 SATA Drives, you'd still be fine. It's the 5th SATA that would be a problem.

Personally, I use one M.2 NVME, and my other devices are all Mechanical SATA drives. Mostly 8tb or more.

Yeah, you'll be fine. I would just not even brother plugging anything into SATA3_0 from jump. That way if you add something else in later you won't have to shuffle things around. The diagram for your MOBI should show you the name of each SATA pin slot. 0 is the "first" one, usually.

So you could have 2 M.2 cards and several SATA drives and you'd still be fine.
