FF had streamlined being linear before it. The only real complaint I'll respect is Hope because yeah, he fucking sucks.

Hallway simulator, I really don't think that's exaggeration. Then for a little bit they let you go to a big ass field where they drop 80% of the side quests, but goes back to hallway simulator for the rest of the game.

There are no side quests besides hunts. Story is confusing and a lot of is told in the menu.

So while not a bad game, it just cant join the rank of a great FF game.

13 by itself is alright. Plot device due to programming limitations or whatever the story generally revolved around the party being on the run.

13-2 had some interesting ideas and LR was just a hot mess. IMO the two games should have been a single game for starters.

There's lots of good things about FF13:
Sazh is the fucking man
Chocolina
That one part where Lighting punches Snow twice
The music is stellar
The story keeping you in the dark is actually pretty nice, because you discover it along with the characters. There's very few things that are worse than a plot point that is explicitly told to the player and having to drag along game characters that are unaware of it, it feels like you're controlling idiots and the surprise is already gone.

Having little experience with FF, it seemed about what I expected of a FF game when I played it. The hallway simulator was fairly naff, but then my (100% uninformed opinion) was that was largely what FF is/used to be.

I thought the characters were generally pretty great and never really got people's issues with Hope.

I wouldn't put it up as a great game by any means, but it was enjoyable to good, for me.

I've not played 13 but going to that from expansive open games that let you explore a vibrant world full of things to do seems like it would be jarring.

It had potential if the sequels actually bothered to build upon its lore and characters rather then discard them all completley, twice.

So the amazing world, lore, and designs they created over so many years of hardwork then were utterly wasted on a game only about 30hrs long. And that fans wont remember even a few months after the game.

Which has been a repeated issue with FFs format of stand alone sequels for a while.

13-2 and LR are both pretty great.

13's combat system isn't all that engaging and the story and characters just aren't interesting enough to carry the game through the early hallways. It's a decent game once it opens up.

The problem with 13 isnt the linearity, most ff are with just an illusion of choice. It's it takes like 15 hours to stop being a tutorial and open up all the in game options. With the secondary problem being how much of the encyclopedia you need to read to make sense of the story they decided not to tell in the story

I didn't hate it because of how linear it was. The combat and music were very nice.

Everything related to the story and characters is the worst in the whole series.

I'm playing through FFVII right now, about half way through. People need to be honest with themselves, VII is more linear than XIII. They aren't technically hallways, but there is still a very very set path to take. And this is the most beloved game in the franchise.

Once you get the airship you get a bunch of sidequests to do, but yeah all FF start at a set path. FF13 is bad for a lot of reasons.

Here we go.

1. They purposefully use really stupid words to describe things. It makes the narrative muddy and purposefully vague like they're trying to make it seem mysterious and grandiose. It wasn't, it was muddled.

2. Most of the characters are not good. Most of them are actually kinda annoying. Lightning is such a blatant attempt to copy Cloud, Hope is an annoying kid, Snow is the annoying angry boy, etc. They keep the team apart for a long time and that makes it so character interactions and thus character growth are really just not present.

3. The world is not engaging at all. The whole "corridor" element is not necessarily true but what is true is the world itself is so bland and boring it makes the linear path monotonous.

4. The combat system does not really open up until you get to the other planet. Pulse right? Until then it is boring and it takes upwards of 25 hours or so for it to become OK.

5. I'm not sure how to quantify this... but I think I find it kinda annoying that Square-Enix almost just kinda expected you to love it. There was this blitzkrieg of an ad campaign akin to FF7 and all this hoopla for what amounted to a lower tier game. The insistence of spending more resources on the series just kinda annoyed me. I've heard the second game was pretty good and so was the third one... but the ultimate legacy of it all for me was Square-Enix didn't give a fuck about what people thought and forced the Trilogy down our throats. Maybe it was super popular in Japan? I dunno

MY complaint with ff13 isn't the linearity

Its the gameplay. The last 10% doesn't justify the shit that was the preceding 90.

FFXIII plays so much better if you set up good battle controls. As in paradigm decks, because paradigm shifting is the primary command point. Focusing on auto-battle spam is missing the point entirely.

As some of the others have touched on, the problem isn't actually the linearity. The problem is the relative lack of exploration and the near complete lack of non-combat gameplay. How much that matters to someone is going to depend a lot on how they get their primary enjoyment from JRPGs. For someone like me who primarily cares about combat and story it's barely a hindrance, whereas someone who primarily plays for exploration and side content is likely to be highly displeased by FFXIII.

It literally had an autobattle button which you would only find on a mobile game.

With that said, I semi-enjoyed it for what it is but I absolutely can understand why people hate this game with a passion. It does a lot wrong that made it really unfun to play as.

Like it even has the same "this is where the game opens up" in Calm Lands/Pulse

13 isn't bad because it's linear and at this point, people strawmanning negative impressions as if that's the argument are essentially lying.

13 is bad because it is a hugely linear game that does linearity bad.

For me FFX technically does share similarities to FF13 in being linear but it does a much better job of hiding it and I really dont think in actuality they are anything like each other when you take everything into account.

  • Actual Shops
  • Towns you can actually explore
  • People to speak to
  • Even the linear paths arent as linear as FF13 and often actually look like real places whereas FF13 was literally just corridors with little thought to the design / aesthetics.

I do still like FF13 but I dont think its fair to compare it to FFX and come to the conclusion they are the same.
