Current Events > In 2021 what are the Final Fantasy games that are worth playing?

Final Fantasy for me is one of the bigger franchises that overall has passed me by. I've dabbled in a few games (VI, VIII, IX) but never finished those ones. I played through IV, VII, XIII and XIII-2 and overall enjoyed them. I'm starting the VII Remake now and it seems great so far.

But overall it feels like a franchise that has passed me by. Is it worth going back?

Haven't played 9 and 8 is kind of a black sheep, it's definitely got some flaws that may ruin the game for you but personally I liked it.

I'm considering playing through VIII Remastered and work my way up from there.

There's an easy way to break this game to blitz through it right? Then again I'm playing Remastered so I think I can technically turn off random encounters and apparently the game is even easier if you're low level because of junctions?

I just played up to Ifrit legit lol. The boss at the end of the fire cave.

6 is amazing

7 is great.

8 is fun if you like becoming OP early on, but by far the worst

9 is amazing

10 is amazing

12 is very good

dont play any that dont have speed boosts though as they revolutionised the games. I cant play the old ones anymore as they are far too slow

Personally prefer the not remastered version, but yeah, if you play like 2-4 hours of carding and Triple Triad, you can just blitz the entire game.

btw X-2's story isn't good, but it's the fastest version of the turn-based system that FF grew with, might be worth a play if ever.

lol playing through the intro of both FFVII Remake and FFVIII and Cloud and Squall seem so bloody similar as characters. Although Squall says "whatever" a lot more.

Eh. The gameplay on the remake is so good its gonna be hard to go back. If you like the old school rpgs then its gotta be 9, 7 or 6. Maaaaybe 12 because it does have its champions. 15 was awesome for about two hours, then you start realizing how rinse repeat the combat is and how bullshit the magic system is.

I'm playing through both FFVII Remake and FFVIII atm.

I'm doing the mission in FFVII Remake with Avalanche to get the explosive material in the factory. Holy shit this game is blowing me away so far. Looks amazing. Combat is fun. All of the characters are written well and are very charming. The pacing thus far is perfect.

FFVIII is a unique experience. Kinda weird how obtuse the system is. I'm understanding it a bit more now. Only now have figured out it's best to train GL's into learning the abilities to alter items into magic asap. Done a couple now. Then from there I guess I then choose to open up more stats to junction and before I know it I'm OP. Haven't quite got into the flow of it but I'm getting closer. The story is interesting but Squall kind of seems like too much of an asshole so far? Telling his instructor to talk to a wall after she opens up that she's basically being fired is one of the douchiest things I've seen from any video game protagonist. Was like a renegade option in Mass Effect.

Also the universal theme across both games so far is that every girl wants to fuck Cloud/Squall who don't care at all.

she kinda does dumb shit like ordering him to a couples spot, then laying all that down on him. As well as flirting during the exam.

There are options toning it down but yeah, he is definitely an ass at the start.

Yeah, turn enemies into cards to avoid gaining XP. Refine cards into magic. Refine magic into stronger magic. Junction strong magic to HP but don't heal. Now your character is in crisis mode with "only" 800 hp, while the other characters are 800 HP max. Keep skipping turn until you have the option to limit break. Win the game.

SNES doesn't allow you to use the extra characters nor does it have the Lunar Trials. Don't play the SNES version.

I thought the best version of IV was PSP

IV on PSP is insanely easy. I played that game with no grinding, and, as a matter of fact, I ran from 90% of all random battles. Was still overleveled and still ragestomped the final boss. Play The After Years on PSP as it's the same as the Wii version, I think, but original IV play only on the GBA.
