And some of these nutjobs are in Congress/the Senate right now.
And more of them are lining up to run, emboldened by the right's wholehearted embracing of alternative facts and pushing outright lies, popularized by none other than Donald "over 30,000 lies in 4 years in office" Trump.

He showed you can lie straight to the rube's faces as long as the lie is what they want to hear, who cares if there is direct video or audio evidence contradicting your bullshit? The rubes will never believe it. Just honk "fake news" and you're golden, and republicans are taking notes.

In about 20 years a significant portion of our legislature is going to basically be 4-chan posters.

We are heading in a very bad direction.

We're through the looking glass here people

Anyone who can needs to get out of here while they can. The country is irrecoverably broken. The only people who can possibly stop the madness (the less bad party) doesn't have the ability nor will to do so either. Republicans can be as awful, corrupt, and evil as they want and nobody does anything about it. Not Democrats, not citizens, nobody.
I'm seriously looking into Italian citizenship by descent; not that Italy is in *such* a great place right now, but hello EU citizenship.

How much Italian heritage do you need for that? Or how many generations removed?

I don't think I can do it just for financial reasons but still curious

To my knowledge there isn't a generational limit, as long as the person you're tracing it back to was alive when Italy became a country (1861 I think?). But basically you just have to prove that your ancestor you're tracing back to Italy (who was born there) never revoked their Italian citizenship. If they didn't, it passed to their children and so on, and as long as nobody revoked it along the way you can claim it. Need birth, marriage, death certificates for everyone down the line I think. In my case it'd be my great-great-grandpa, so a lot of time and effort (and money yeah) if I go through with it.

I believe there are also companies you can hire to track down and compile all the relevant paperwork for you.

Not Italy I know, but if you live & work in Spain for 5 years you can apply for Spanish citizenship - still EU. Friend of mine got his in February with no hassle.

I wish I had a better opinion of either far side of the political spectrum at this point Lots of stuff rings of extremism & big compromises, and Im not sure I see the need in either instance. This is to be noted, as many of the institutes & figures I follow in my life are not supporting either end of it. I tend to listen to them because our views tend to match. As they continue to do so. But Ill say no more. What I really care about first & foremost is my own well-being & the well-being of my peers.

I didn't know about this, I thought I'd have to do it the old fashioned way.

I might actually have some Italian ancestor, going way, way, way back.
