I was doing chin ups the other day and a muscle in my chest suddenly started to have a painful, burning sensation. I stopped immediately to rest it, but its been about three days and it still hurts when I try to lift stuff. It actually seems to hurt more today than when it happened.

Ive heard that a pulled muscle hurts almost the same as a broken bone, so I dont think its pulled. Still, I need to get my exercise, so (other than rest), can anyone recommend anything to make it heal faster?

So far, I tried to massage it out and Ive used some Icy Hot, but any suggestions would be welcome. If rest is the only thing I can do, how long would you expect until it starts healing up?

Your body likely needs potassium to aid with healing the pulled muscle.

It sounds like you worked your body too hard. Know your limits. Workouts are about conditioning. It's unrealistic to expect massive gains out of a single workout.

Need to know if you are taking in potassium and magnesium and how long it's been since the workout

Im not taking any sort of potassium or magnesium (unless its in a Mens One a Day). Its been three days since this happened. I didnt try to exercise since it happened.

I do admit that I was working out randomly without any workout plan. I would just do three or four here and there.

I'm also assuming that you didn't stretch before working out. Stretching is important.

I always stretch for like 30 minutes before working out. It makes a world of difference. Be sure to drink water as well. Being poorly hydrated will keep your body from healing quickly.

At the least start taking a multi-vitamin. If you are physical and working out and your body is looking for certain things, you can faceplant if they aren't there. Healing issues are typically lack of vitamins/nutrients to aid the healing process also. Just gotta prepare and pace yourself accordingly.

Stretching after is important, too. If you can get a lacrosse ball or a softball and roll on that on the muscle that hurts, it will help release the knots (but it will also hurt in the first 30-45 seconds like an intense massage).

Also try an Epsom salt bath. They're usually better for more recent strain, but it may still help.

The thing is that its way worse than a typical post-workout soreness. I really think it might be partially torn or strained or something. Im afraid I might make it worse.

if there's pain when you move the location of the pain. could be a strained ligament.
especially if it's bad.

i suffered it myself. all it takes is not paying attention and a pothole. ended my foot that day.
wasn't the sprain incident, happened yesterday. leg was strained and limped until the next morning.

Three days may feel like a lot but thats actually a short amount of time. It takes longer to recover than that. So just be patient. And definitely dont workout that muscle and try and push passed the pain. That will just make the process extended and take that much longer to fully recover.
