FFXIV -> FFT -> FF6 -> FF7 -> FF10 -> FF4 -> FFT:A -> Dissidia -> FFT:A2 -> FF8

I don't count FF7:R because it isn't complete yet, but tentatively I'd probably put it just above the original FF7 because I like action oriented games.

I've only played FF7 (Playstation), FFX (Playstation 2) and Final Fantasy 3 (DS). I've only played part of Final Fantasy 8 (Playstation) and some of Chocobo Tales (DS)

I'm as fairweather a Final Fantasy fan as you can get.

X triggers me so hard. Maturely: it seems popular. Immaturely: Holy hell is the story stupid, Tidus and Yuna are stupid, they super sexualize a 15 year old, blitzball is the dumbest shit in the FF universe. Its the first FF i put down cause i wasnt enjoying it at all.

From best to worst

(Masterpiece tier games: Should absolutely be played or at least tried but anyone who likes RPGS)

FFTactics (Most complex, interesting story, great combat, incredible world building, very little exploration if you care about that though)

FF7: (+Great characters, +great character interactions, +incredible music, +great combat, +great materia/leveling up system -overly convoluted plot that is poorly translated)

FFX: (Best combat system in the series, great music, great graphics, great characters (tidus can be irritating for those who don't relate to his character, or relate too much), pretty great world building (spira is great, and seeing every city react to destruction in its own way is cool), great character development (particularly Wakka, Tidus, and Auron, best leveling system in the series with sphere grid

This is my fav final fantasy, but it has large flaws that put it low on people's lists who went in with high expectations. A lot of modern gamers are addicted to open world games and cannot get past who linear it is. Additionally, due to the extreme story focus, if you don't like the story you won't like the game.

FF9: Wonderful characters, wonderful world building, and probably the best music in the series. The plot kinda takes a nosedive at the end and is overly covoluted, but the game's characters make up for it. The thing that really holds FF9 back is the combat system. I would go as far as to say that it has the singel worst combat system in the entire series because

1. It is INCREDIBLY SLOW
2. It is incredibly easy until the last 10% of the game, which is then obnoxiously difficult
3. Limit system takes too long to charge, and when you get full limit bar, it goes off by itself. So it pretty much goes off during random battles all the time by itself when you are trying to run away. The limits are massively overpowered, hit for like 8k damage when your part does 300 damage wtih attacks so it trivializes bosses if you can actually get it to go off during a boss fight
4. Because the atb system is so slow, persistent over time effects like regen are utterly busted because they tick too fast. They cost nothing, and tick during long spell animations essnetially fully healing your character during any long spell animation.
5. It almost seems like the battle system was slowed down (it moves so slow) due to perfomrance issues, but the effects of that on balance weren't resolved for spells like regen

Crisis Core: I'm getting tired now and am just going to start listing the games. THis game has a very strong plot and its action combat is solid

FF6: It's a great game. And I'm sure a lot would put it even #1. It's just really mediocre on worldbuilding, characters (there are just too many), character interaciton, adn even music. I would argue it has the weakest music in the series, actually.
This is probablay my most controversial listing, but it really just feels like a poor man's chrono trigger (which would be #1 on this list if it was an FF game)

FF4

Low Tier (only play if FF fan)

FF8: The problems with this game are just numerous. I could see someone putting in mid tier. The draw system is utterly busted, the leveling system is busted, the plot convoluted, the characters besides a couple are pretty bad.

FF13: Why oh god why don't play this game. Bad story, bad characters, bad story execution, combat is too autopilot, the music is bad, omg this game. This is the most expensive bad game in history. I hate this game, can you tell.

FF12: Ivalice is now based off FFTA for very questionable reasons, the most boring plot in the entire series, the main character...doesnt exist, the side characters....exist. Han solo I mean Balthier is OK, and his furry sexy Chewie is aight too. The gambit system is cool, but then you realize that if you use it correctly you don't have to play the game anymore. This is what happens when the gameplay doesn't have enough depth. And Wow, the walking.
Did I mention Vaan's abs? Lol
