Or do they think the only reason the British lost back then was because not much effort was put into the war?

And I guess conversely, do Americans believe they defeated the entire British empire in the war or just a small fraction, but was enough to gain independence?

I don't particularly care enough to think about whether we lost it fair and square, and I expect most Brits think the same as me in regards to it.

No. The only mentions we usually see about is is online, and on TV, and other fiction. It's just another countries holiday.

The British would probably have to be celebrating non-stop if they had a holiday every time one of their former colonies gained independence.

It's essentially an irrelevant point in our history, or one not seen as important enough to spend more than a glancing look at compared to the larger picture of struggles/wars with European nations.
