With such a huge gap between now and your last outing, you may actually have a pretty good time with it, since it's still much more content than Gen 1 had.

It's those of us who have been playing the games consistently since the old days who were left burned by Sword/Shield.

Only if you plan on getting into the competitive aspect of it. Though even then you have Pokemon Showdown (which has to option of using Gen 8 mechanics) you could use for that instead.

If you were to play one of the newer ones, I'd probably suggest either Black or even one of the remakes. Sword/Shield aren't horrible games but they are way too easy. The only downside is that a lot of the newer games are stupidly expensive.

This. Sw/Sh aren't bad games, they're just a step down from the great games we had back in gen 4-6.

sadly its only been getting worse. I remember playing Sun and as soon as I finished it I sold it. I normally keep my Pokemon games but that was just a bad experience through and through. Great Pokemon added to the game, but between the blockades at every corner preventing you from exploring and the removal of gym leaders... just wasn't for me.

And then Sw/Sh come out. Again, great Pokemon added to the game, and they added some really nice features like the Dynamax system, but there were parts of the game I was just like "Really?". Case in point, when gyms suddenly are more important than the story going on. The dark gym really set me off a little. Something happens prior to entering the dark gym, but we are told... focus on your gym battles, and not this". Like... I wanted to actually see what was going on. The gym will still be there.
