This seems like a roundabout way of getting corporate stores out of SF. The managers of CVS, Walgreens, etc, cant touch shoplifters because of orders from corporate, but the owner/manager of Joes Pharmacy can do whatever to stop thieves.

That was last year right when the pandemic struck and prisons were a hotbed for covid spread. In addition you're talking about the DA when it literally says the public defenders office made this request. At least glance at the irrelevant article you're gonna link.

Even if this was last year, its still applies today. Sf, (and some other Bay Area cities) are not arresting people for minor crimes. Thats the point.

but he doesn't, because his stuff is insured too. it's not worth someone getting shot and having a lawsuit filed over <$1000 worth of insured stuff. that's why the cops aren't bothering either. they don't wanna deal with a 5-10mil lawsuit because someone tried to stop a shoplifter and it got out of hand

I literally saw some old lady run out with a cart of stuff having her kids running behind and people just watched

The thing I find most fascinating is the video is that there are so many shoplifters. How do they even team up like that? A SF shoplifter discord?

Craigslist was where a ring of them coordinated. One place I worked at the head of operations told me about how there was the same people that would target the most expensive clothes

They finally just put it in the storage area and had workers go back to fetch it since they refused to actually prosecute them since it would be "bad press"

What happened to George Floyd was inexcusable and fortunately Chauvin received prison time, even though it shouldve been life.

However, shoplifting the fuck out of stores to the point that they shut down and leave local communities having to commute even farther to buy essentials is a separate matter that needs to be addressed.

All I see happening is retail leaving, then population dwindling as a death-spiral of decreasingly well-off residents leave in waves, until the only ones still there are the ones who can't leave.
Then, about twenty years later, gentrification begins the cycle all over again.

You can, although the specifics vary by state I believe. In some states a shopkeeper can apprehend a suspected shoplifter for a "reasonable" amount of time. However, most larger corporate retail stores strictly enforce rules against this, since they don't want to go to court and pay out millions if one of their employees gets shot by a crazy shoplifter.
