50k for a psa 9 charizard
250k for a psa 10 charizard

Its pretty nuts bro, for silly pokemon cards. The crazy thing is that i used to own a lot of these cards at one point. I remember pulling a blastoise and a venusaur, not sure if they were first edition but bro these cards are super rare and a lot of people want them right now.

Any of you guys have any of the 1st edition base set cards?

I actually have 3 commons from the alpha set ofmagic the gathering, i figured that was gonnabe worth more since it was the first trading card game but pokemon is just beastly. The newer cards are beautiful too. There is a gx charizard thats fully foil it just looks amazing.

Honestly a bit expected from my viewpoint. Since I was in elementary school when Pokmon hit the statesthat shit was just a cultural landslide. Everyone knew what it was.

im surprised how little magic cards are worth. i was expecting a psa 8 black lotus to go for $100k giving how much every other trading card seems to have gone up over the last couple of years.

also just regular basketball cards from the 80s / 90s have gotten really expensive. a regular jordan from 88/89 at PSA10 might go for $500 now.

A Black Lotus sold for $500,000 a few years back. The problem with MTG is the prices dont really fluctuate. Its by far the most expensive of the big three trading card games to get into whether it be new sets or classic sets. Sealed Arabian Nights boosters cost a nut for instance.

That was an alpha black lotus though, and i think sold earlier this year. A PSA 8 released 93 black lotus is like $10-15k.

Yeah i might be wrong but even yugioh cards sell for more than most limited alpha cards. I think its cuz mtg just relies on its card game, yugioh and pokemon all have an entire universe and are therefore much more collectable even though mtg is the superior card game. Although the pokemon card game is really fun.

I heard a lot of these card games are going to go digital and they are going to stop printing physical cards.

yeah from what i can tell pokemon cards are more akin to sports cards than MTG cards. it seems MTG is geared more towards players with collectors as a subset, whereas pokemon cards seem to be geared more towards the collector and less towards the actual player.

PSA rates cards based upon their condition. A 10 is a perfect card.

should be noted that for most runs, it is very rare to get a 10 even completely fresh out of a pack of cards. a 10 needs to be perfectly centered, corners are sharp (or maybe show no wear?), edges show no white or fraying, surfaces (front and back) are flawless. Things like finger prints on the card can lower the score.

Its honestly amazing how a hobby can turn into a business, or just something silly can make you tons of money because it brings out that nerd in you. Its kind of like how every generation has their comedies that they can quote from the heart and actually making money off of that skill.

I was watching a guy who went to college, studied business, got a full time job in wall street and then somehow ended up owning his own card shop instead because he liked that and was passionate about that more than investing and the dude has a networth of over 5 million dollars at 35 years old.

I have thought about getting back into collecting coins and reselling them either by coin roll hunting or just by looking for deals on sites like ebay. I feel like you can just keep reinvesting your money into the business and its easy work, pretty fun to open up rolls of quarters, dimes, nickels etc. And seeing if you get anything rare. I am not sure which one fetches more money, but i feel like it is a safer bet than trading cards.

i used to love roll hunting when i got my license i started by getting rolls from my bank, but soon i was getting back rolls i had re-rolled, so started going to other banks nearby and returning to my bank. seemed like it used to be in 10 rolls of quarters, good chance i'd get 5-8 silver. Half dollars and dimes were better, got about that same 5-8 per 10 rolls on half dollars but only half as many half dollars in a roll. Last I did it was like 05/06/07, seemed like I was getting 1-2 silvers per 10 rolls by then.

I remeembered as a kid the teachers showed us some news segment showing how pokemon cards are only worth a couple of cents (only factoring the materials and cost to make) as if that is the only reason why anything is worth what its worth
