Its told not through exposition or cutscenes but by the player deciphering visuals. it is one of the few games to not insult its audience.

it's got a pretty good world building , but I consider story to be stuff like "event happens to character" and "villain does thing". Dark Souls is basically just you running around killing things; some of the NPCs get a bit of progression like Solaire and Onionbro.
Contrast this to, say, FF6 which has people rise to power ingame, most of the PCs getting a personal arc, a cataclysm, etc. --- Remember that I won't rest, 'til we share the same tense Just know, to me, you're better late than never again. ... Copied to Clipboard!

it's a different kind of 'story telling'
not everyone might get it but the game hit me with 'be aware of your surroundings' a little too much and after that, i felt the map more than dialogue and worded-expositions, yes i killed stuff to advance but god damn, i just love the mysteries of the maps, it made me wanna explore shit, even the sewers/poisonous area --- Life is just a journey from the maternity ward to the crematorium. ... tbh i never really paid much attention to the stories in those, maybe i shouldve? i mostly enjoyed the challenge. vs monster hunter esp and old mega man games.

No, it has some of the best lore but its not straightforward so i cant say its the best in gaming.

Yes
So much so that a small defense force formed. People spend more time investing in the lore than they do playing the game (or other games) sometimes lol The Trilogy as a whole is essentially the greatest epic in gaming right now ... Copied to Clipboard!
