so if i have the values 2 and 90, the average is 46

but if i have the values 45 and 47, the average is also 46

so how is this useful? averages don't tell me anything about my values.

You're right, it doesn't. Other values like median, mode, and range add context to average. Since there are only 2 numbers given, only range applies.

2, 90
Mean: 46
Range: 88

45, 47
Mean: 46
Range: 2

There are many people with 0 feet or 1 foot. And there are a few with more than 2 feet.
