20k just for a dumb shortcut. But that run from the basin bonfire (and up that stupidly tall ladder) is such a chore that I splurge every time.

But it takes like 40 seconds beyond the door to kill the humanoids and farm those 20k back.

It's a great spot for farming souls if you wanna do something expensive like upgrading your pyro glove, at least. It's always been my go-to for that.

you don't have to use it, though, it just gives you the easiest course to go through.

there are other ways around the forest.

I think gating the area off like that is good, since generally you'd want a new player to not just kill Sif and forget about the Ring and then have no fucking clue what to do when they get to New Londo.
