I have 4 inside cats. They don't try to escape, they just stay inside. 3 I adopted from the outside.

When they would try to escape, I'd just pick em up and put em somewhere else.

Mostly, except for supervised walks around the garden. She's very small and timid, so she's usually too scared to run outside.

Before we started walking her, she would be completely obsessed with sitting at the window and watching the other cats. Like, no matter how we tried to distract her she would sit and watch for the whole day. Now, she goes outside, sniffs around, and goes back in and is perfectly happy indoors.

A cat that doesn't go outside doesn't try very hard to get out. Cats are very much tied to known territory and tend to approach new environments slowly and cautiously.

I remember one cat I had very briefly: he died of a heart defect very young was trying to catch a bug against the door, but the door was unlocked, so when he fell against it, it opened and he tumbled outside and fell off the stoop.
He immediately bolted up the steps and cried pathetically to be let in. Granted, he was kind of coward.

All the cats my family has had have been indoor cats. A couple of them could be insistent about trying to get out when you opened the door, and one of them did get out for a while before being found. But for the most part it hasn't been an issue.

Ive got a few neighbors that let their cat wander around the streets. Can usually spot like 10 of them while walking my dog. Some sit on top of car hoods but most just on the grass near the sidewalk. One of the cats looked like it seen some shit too with a messed up eye and a few bald spots on its fur.
There is an orange cat that climbs up my 2nd floor patio sometimes. Has a collar so not a stray .

Every time my mom's had a cat she tried to have it be an indoor cat, but it became so obnoxious to have to keep watch for the little scampers trying to zoom out every time a door was opened just a crack that she just gave in.

My cat is indoors but he goes on the balcony with me. And my kids like taking him on leashed walks.

My current cat, Squeak, is strictly an indoor cat. All the same, I keep the door in the kitchen leading to the garage shut at all times. She likes getting up on windowsills and looking outside, though.

My cat used to try to get out once in a while when she was younger, but now she only peeks out of the door.

Another cat I had a long time ago was a out door cat until he came home with a lump on his head. Vet said it was from fighting other animals and I'd have to keep a eye on him for any signs of rabies, thankfully he didn't have rabies.
