Wait, 6? I've read the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit, but what are the other two?

EDIT: Also film-wise I've seen all three of LOTR, and the first part of The Hobbit, never got around to the other two.

I'm a Tolkien nerd. Read LOTR, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, etc. Tolkien was using an old epic style of writing in LOTR/TS like the tellings of legends of old since his stories are supposed to legends of our distant past. It's probably not for everybody. It took me several tries to read The Silmarillion, but once I finally "got it", it was wonderful and I love it.

As a kid I started to read Hobbit. I didn't get past the Dwarves at Bilbo's house

It's on my to do list to eventually read the whole saga. Recently got back into reading and I have a massive list of stuff I want to get through. But that's on there

The Hobbit is fairly enjoyable. Its about the most complex childrens book ever made. LOTR in book version is plodding, but the storylines are there. If youre an avid reader, I think youll gravitate to them more since theres just a lot of verbiage to parse through.

Tolkien will spend literally 12 pages describing a field in the summertime and then with a single sentence be like "42 years went by in the Shire pretty peacefully"

The Lord of the Rings is 6 books sold in 3 sets of 2. Its also not told as a trilogy or even a 6 set. Its a single story. Each book does not have an ending. Its one cohesive story.

I'm pretty sure my copy of it was a single chungus-ass book, but I do remember it being talked about as 3 books. Never heard of them being split in half each, though. O_O

The Hobbit is fun, fast paced, and a bit quirkily written like a story teller.

LotR is long, overwritten in all the wrong places, and not a lot of fun to read.

I read it for a brutal class I took back in college a decade ago. We had to read through the each book (as in Fellowship, Two Towers) in a week and this was after combing through The Silmarillion with draconian quizzes about various elf genealogies. It was nuts.

Thankfully watching the movies and already reading Fellowship back in my senior year of high school helped make that part of the class a walk in the park but yeah not recommended for beginners.
