Spurred into Flight, Drenched and Fallen - The Night Rises
S-Rank Battle
House of Sacred Remains

Match #2 annoys the heck out of me, I'd certainly take either of those songs over any of the other 4 today. S-Rank & Hurry Up manage to appeal to different parts of me, and it seems much less common to find songs with Hurry Up's appeal than it is to find S-Rank's. With Hurry Up, I Love the surreal, world-breaking feel of it's first half. But then it gets to 1:47, and that section is too "normal" and repetitive. Partly because I don't think it's really meant to be listened to this way! You're supposed to HURRY UP and finish the level before this part of the music plays! Plus the parts of the level where this plays have differing timers so this part probably just repeats itself because it's past the point where it would fully play in some levels, but not others. So in a way I sort of wonder just how "intended" it is to be listened to like this! But anyway then it gets to the oops the universe died because you didn't hurry up good and I appreciate this un-music part being added to the Loop. I love the unique experience that song brings but unfortunately S-Rank battle is so good I have to vote for it instead

-[It's impossible for me to put myself in the mind of someone who thinks that sonic r's music is "cheesy", just can't fathom perceiving it that way.

that's exactly how i feel. i put "cheesy" as a way to describe music in the same category as "soulless." those words mean literally nothing to me in a music discussion context. music that people call "cheesy" is often 10/10 music for me haha. the sonic r soundtrack is a good example of this.

Living in the City
S-Rank Battle
House of Sacred Remains

-after the organ intro, house of sacred remains kinda makes me think of metroid prime-- not because of any real familiarity with that soundtrack, but specifically because the low vox reminds me of the Metroid Prime menu theme, and it has an echoing ambiance that gives me a Metroid-esque 'wandering alone' feeling, which I like a lot. With that backdrop, the reintroduction of the organ almost feels intrusive, but it's quickly followed up by the pluck synth 6/8 section, which I think is really good as a harder-hitting section that still maintains that feeling of exploring in the dark.

Hurry Up!
House of Sacred Remains

Keeping the dream alive.

I really hate the sinking feeling I get when I discover a new song in VGMC and simultaneously realize both that the song is really cool and that literally nobody is ever going to vote for it.

Bravely Default II - Spurred into Flight, Drenched and Fallen - The Night Rises
CrossCode - S-Rank Battle
Chaos Code - Eleganza

MATCH 1

Bravely Default music has a nice style to it and Spurred into Flight is no exception! 1:09 and onwards is where it gets into that brighter battle theme music that I like hearing from these songs.

I think Tox's description of this song as having 90's EDM traits is probably why I like this song as much as I do. Those catchy vocals and lush chords is what stands out to me in this song, particularly in the chorus. Tough match and I wish I could let both songs advance (tempted to say that I'd take both songs over the match 2 songs, but S-Rank Battle's pretty close to both match 1 songs), but Spurred into Flight's more my thing.

MATCH 2

S-Rank is really cool rhythmically and has some good melodies to it as well. I can't really describe it in depth, but I think this is a good example of what I like about CrossCode music.

Hurry Up's an interesting song, but I only really begin to enjoy it from 1:18-3:11 or so. Even then, some of the different sound effects throughout like the clock ticking towards the end of that part isn't something I enjoy, but the more melodic elements of that part are pretty cool. That higher-pitched synth sounds slightly detuned to me, which I'm sure is done on purpose, but it feels slightly weird to me. Not enough for me to dislike it, but worth mentioning.

MATCH 3

I really like the folkiness of Eleganza! I could listen to this song all day. Everything in this song comes together really nicely to create a really cool sound.

1:37-2:36 is probably one of the coolest things I've ever heard in a Castlevania song. Really cool atmosphere and sound. Unfortunately though, everything else in this song is way less enjoyable to me. There isn't anything about those beginning and end parts that draw me into the song. I really like Eleganza so I'd probably vote for it here regardless, but if the rest of House of Sacred Remains sounded like that part, this could potentially be a strong song for me.

Sonic R - Living in the City [10]
Wario Land 4 - Hurry Up! [9.5]
Castlevania: Lament of Innocence - House of Sacred Remains [7.5]

Bravely Default II - Spurred into Flight, Drenched and Fallen - The Night Rises [4.5]
CrossCode - S-Rank Battle [8.0]
Chaos Code - Eleganza [5.5]

I hoped I'd have a second today to wax about how massively formative Sonic R is to me. Some other time, I'm sure, but I will say it feels great to finally have a direction in this life. Busy day, and I'm confident this is only the beginning.
