people think its the cables that have the versions, but its really the device/ports.

but then there are cable standards. but what are they? i know premium certified means theyve been tested, but why did my premium cable cause flickering issues when i turned HDR on my Nvidia Shield until i bought a cable that specifically said its 4k60z compatible

Cables and ports both have different versions. Some cables won't support HDMI 2.0 (mostly older ones).

We should all start endorsing "display port" cables instead of HDMI. HDMI is proprietary and owned by like SOny and Hitachi or someone else like that. Display port is just an open version of HDMI not owned.

ok looking at this

https://www.hdmi.org/resource/cables

it appears its Standard, High Speed, and now Ultra High Speed, with ethernet variations sprinkled in

and the premium certifications have higher bandwidthes. but they've just been tested? are they just better binned cables then? could a normal high speed cable hit 4k60hz if you were lucky enough?

Agreed, and its also better than HDMI in regards to bandwith. The most recent version of display port (2.0) has almost 2 times the bandwith of the most recent version of HDMI (2.1).

see this shit confuses me:
https://www.pcmag.com/news/slaying-the-cable-monster-what-you-need-to-know-about-hdmi-cables

basically they did their own tests and got this:

regular high speed isn't supposed to handle 4k60 but it did. hell, one of their "1080p" standard cables did 4k60 and HDR

i dont get it! is it like with ethernet how cat5 isn't supposed to handle gigabit speeds, but can if its short enough? just that sometimes itll work?

yeah that'd be easy, but i dont wanna get swindled like those gold plated optical cables lmao.

reason i started thinking about this is because i have a 18G "Premium High Speed" HDMI cable running from my AV receiver to my TV. i was thinking in 5-10 years, if 8k is the new hot thing, would i need to replace my cabling because my receiver already says its HDMI 2.1 enabled.
