"Okay, let me watch TV. Umm...literally every show I've ever seen is available to stream...okay, how about a sitcom...What kind? 70s? 80? Nah, 90's. Okay...90's family sitcom, or 90's single guy sitcom, or..."

"Okay, time to play a video game. I just finished one yesterday, so I'll pick one from my backlog. My backlog is 17 games. Plus the ROMs of games from 20 years ago I haven't played yet. Fuck."

"Okay, just took out the recycables...shit, nevermind, I just got another damn Amazon box."
Etc, etc, etc...

It is. I simplify everything as much as I can. There's a reason everyone is stressed out all the time. Society boxed itself in. At least, America did.

Also, it's depressing when you realize how little your part of recycling does when giant companies are choosing profit over making things way easier to recycle. We don't really have the power to change anything dramatically, they just like putting it in our heads that we do.

Modern life provides too much choice to the point that it pushes people towards niches and turns them into lonely islands.

Think about the 90s. If you're a teen and you like music videos, you tune into MTV. You listen to the top 10 with TRL or whatever. What happens there? You listen to Britney Spears (bubble gum pop), followed by Metallica (rock) and then TLC (R&B). All one after the other.

The metallica kid will dislike britney, but he is stuck listening to that 1 or 2 songs in exchange for listening to metallica and then limp bizkit.

But in the end... all kids saw the same. It is unifying in the sense that everybody went through an experience and then they can talk about it or bond over it.

90s kids will remember arguing at school about genesis vs snes, or game boy vs game gear. and everybody ran to the TV when it was time to watch Friends, while the older people all talked about 60 minutes.

Now? People have all sorts of channels that cater to a very specific taste or non-sexual fetish, and not just on tv. You're obsessed with shows about cooking seafood? I bet there's a way to watch seafood cooking videos and shows ("So you say you can see the seabass in the sea, Bass?") for hours everyday. That's it, you have no idea about Game of Thrones or Succession because you don't watch that "shit", you watch "So you say you can see the seabass in the sea, Bass?" and other things like that and you found yourself a community of sea bass cooking fetishists who are obsessed with it too.

And that part I signaled in italics is also what drives people to radicalization. The village idiot in the 90s that said that vaccines have microchips and that khajits are being brought here to outbreed the nords would have been laughed at. Now he can create a discord server or a gamefaqs private board for like minded dumbasses and rant about khajit replacement theories and then we end in the situation we have right now.

Think it's the opposite. We pretty much don't have to do much of anything to survive. So our days are mostly filled with doing absolutely nothing of real meaning or utility outside of our jobs(maybe)

Hmm, interesting idea. I think it's a combination of both, actually - we don't have much important stuff to do, so we invent unimportant stuff to do.

Snip

I've noticed this trend, too. There's just not nearly as much of a universal, shared culture as there used to be. Even the most popular shows on TV, like NCIS, nobody in my offices watches, and while some shows like comic book stuff do the trick, only a couple folks at my office view, and a couple others who are 3 years behind because they can watch it whenever. There's no true successor to the days where you'd talk about the X-Files or The Simpsons every week.

If you should go skating
On the thin ice of modern life
Dragging behind you, the silent reproach
Of a million tear stained eyes
Don't be surprised when a crack in the ice
Appears under your feet
You'll slip out of your depth and out of your mind
With your fear flowing out behind you
As you claw the thin ice
