Nice, I play but have never done much painting lol. I didn't have the patience as a kid. On topic, I got a citadel paint kit, and all the colors have settled... Is there any way to save the paint? : /

Otherwise it's another store trip to take this crap back and they only do credit returns >.<

No they're new unfortunately, but the colors are chunky and the pgiments are separating. Shaking helps some.

also, i've always thought warmahordes was a better rule set.

Oh yeah, you have to shake them until your arm falls off when you first get them, depending on the colour. Small glass beads can be used as an agitator. You can also use a toothpick to help mix the paint.

Im not an awesome painter or anything by any means, but Ive had experience and know the basics of most techniques. Please feel free to PM or @ me if youve got any questions

Put a few drops of water in the paint, and stir with a toothpick, repeat for each.

If you are looking for an army, answer these 4 questions, and I will suggest one.

Do you prefer shooting or melee?
Do you want to see your army roll over the table in one big wave, or do you prefer surgical strikes?
Do you like watching tanks blow stuff up, or do you prefer seeing people win the day?
Do you adhere to some ideal, or do you like fighting for the sake of fighting?

Shooting!

I like both to be honest... But I'd have to say surgical strikes for strategy's sake :D

I like the indiscriminate death of tanks but prize my soldiers for doing their duty!

I adhere to some ideal for sure.

I was looking at the Tau, Eldar, and Imperial Guard. I like the idea of the Imperial Guard being regular joes in a world they can scarcely comprehend and just laying down body after body in pursuit of equaling these beastly forces.

The Tau just fuckin look cool imo, and I dig their robot suits

Eldar are much the same but I know they're also kind of a tricky race with 'magic'/psychic powers and are very specialized and it would give me a sense of pride to get good at them.

I love the space marines too, but tbh there are so many space marine armies I wanted to do something against the grain. I don't like the chaos armies because I abhor their ideals and their worship of demons and chaos lol. The Tau seem like the only decent race left with any optimism which I like.

I want to get into it, I mean I've played a lot of videogame adaptations, and I love the lore/universe.

But I already drop quite a lot of money on gunpla, so also picking up Warhammer, though I'd love to, would kill my wallet.

The trick is not to buy your entire army at once. Evenly space it out over a couple of months.

This is what I'm doing. I found a lot of stuff on Ebay that I'm getting. Might get both Tau and Imperial Guard since they're so low priced :D

Then I can try some skirmishes to get a feel for them. I really like the look of the Tau; unfortunately they seem to be the single least popular faction but whatevs it'll just make my army more interesting imo

Most of that has to do with some of the lore surrounding them, and that they can out-gun just about every other army on the table.

Do you have to do the painting yourself? Because I am both bad at it, and lack the materials.

to play competitively, they need to be painted. casually, it's up to your opponent, but it is generally expected. they don't need to be painted well, however. or by you, you can definitely contract it out, but it'll usually cost you more than the paints themselves will.

You can hire professional miniature painters to do your army for you. I do not know the prices they charge, but I would guess "not cheap". But unless you are playing in a tournament, or the people in your gaming group have sphincters so tight they could swallow coal and crap out a diamond, most people probably don't care if they are unpainted.

Just dropped 100$(or really more like 80 GBP) on a Tau army on ebay. Pretty good deal, way better than buying out of box.

Got a

Tau Commander
Tau XV8 crisis Battlesuit team
Fire warrior squad
2 shield drones
5 man unit of gun drones
3 man XV25 Stealth Battlesuit squad

And the crown jewel, an

XV88 Broadside Battlesuit

figure that's more than a decent start. Got a bid on another fire squadron for more grunts as well.

I did just launch a YouTube channel for 40k battle reports, and T'au is my main force. The game is really good, and painting just takes patience and practice. I would highly recommend a wet pallet, as well.

Thats more wet blending. Some people can get really smooth a f transitions with that but I prefer working with glazing and feathering

A wet palette is a piece of parchment paper on a sponge, basically. Its great for controlling the dilution of paint exactly and really helps with building smooth transitions that way. Plus, it keeps paint wet and usable almost indefinitely. Reduces wastage and is super helpful if youre working with a particular mix.
