they're a kpop group right. they're supposed to make korean music and shit. kpop is all about the fandom and making them happy

I think that's just YG. They find a marketable product, that's all they're going to milk, and play the market. They probably got a good deal out of Teddy producing most everything. Don't get me wrong, the girls themselves are talented, but no offense to anyone, I'd say at least half of BP's songs are a total miss. I'm seeing a similar thing with Somi, who - not to hate - is yielding another blind fandom.

Unfortunately, they're ahead with this. A lot of sheep out there.

imo one reality I see with this industry is most everything gets outdated and disposable. Few groups and songs can persist through generations. It's so heavily reliant in the upfront, short term gains.
So, just gonna make the most out of each product.

Just started watching Queendom 2 finally.

Oh this is so good. I love watching my favorite groups (Loona, WSJN, Kep1er) interacting with each other.

Aespa, who have very little experience performing in front of even small crowds due to debuting during COVID, and who still have never actually sang live during a performance, are going to perform at Coachella. The response should be interesting to say the least, they will get torn to shreds if they go up there and lipsync. On the plus side they are going to perform a brand new song in their setlist, must mean a comeback is near

I mean, it depends on what your definition of "singing live during a performance" is but yeah, it's pretty crazy that they chose this stage to be their first major live performance.

Mmm, the whole album has a pretty mellow sound overall, which I find very easy to get into. Crazy, paradoxical, but in a way LeSserafim already sound kinda safer, more traditional. Which isn't bad or anything. I agree, some of the b sides I actually like more than Fearless, even though they're even more overproduced, and mellower.

Acquiring Pledis for example is what allowed them to poach Yunjin. I may rag on Big Hit and Army but what's good for Kpop is good for Kpop. And they're looking to do very well indeed, as I'm writing this they have broken the vaunted 10/24 record in views which only 3 debuting girl groups have, and I think only BP does normally. And if you argue that doesn't necessarily translate to more important numbers, I read the album is selling some insane number like 250k+. I mean now if we think about it, this group is freaking stacked.

They stand out for sure, for one thing most of them are pretty tall for idols like 5'7+, the tallest a full 5'9, which have earned then the nickname "fashion model idols". Then like Kazooo mentioned the styling is very natural... it looks almost low budget sometimes! To paraphrase Dolly Parton it's probably very elaborate to look this natural. Take the hair for example, all dark which I love, usually with hair like that specially for debut a group would do more of a "pure", innocent concept if anybody still remembers those, and the outfits would be very stylized. Again, it's like they've combined everything to give them this simple yet different look from the usual. It's very interesting, yeah maybe even breaking that mold of the Kpop image a little bit.

Exactly, that's why it's technically correct. It's still dismissive of the history of the company (and its subsidiaries) but I guess that's the point.

Mmm, insane. Again even after all the previews you posted it was only yesterday that it hit me just how anticipated they were. First there's the P48/IZONE factor, which can be pretty big as we've seen. Then there's the Sakura/JP factor, obviously related but a huge factor just by itself and actually a big part of what made IZONE popular in the first place. And then the HYBE factor. And all these are multipliers on top of the girls base appeal, which I think they did a good job presenting. So yeah, it goes to show the one factor that never fails in the old Kpop popularity formula... just be popular since the beginning!

Oof, so that potential SNSD comeback teaser was just for Hyoyeon's mini album. Bit of noise marketing on SM's part since for every other solo teaser they tag the respective member and make it clear that it's a solo release. Seems like a bit of a dumb move on their part.

Might just be my PoV, but SM seems to be unable to keep up with promoting every solo artist they have under their hat. It's like NCT, Aespa, then everyone else.

Between that and Station features, they're pretty spread out.

Really only thing I don't like is Sakura seemingly got promoted at the forefront only to be the bottom of line distribution. But unfortunately I can believe that was for a reason.

IMO there's a game of opportunity/timing in an industry with fast-moving trends. A successful release/exposure relies a lot on finding a window of time or the jump on "getting the first word in".

At least to my foreign/casual perception, Le Sserafim already took my attention before I could build anticipation for anything else. Because especially in this industry, listeners kinda look for the next development in sound and image.

I can't fault Classy (or anyone being a fan of them), but already to me, the sound and image isn't so much of a standout*. I felt that way about StayC early on as well, but Young Luv came at the right time.

*for my own personal tastes, I'm still more mindful of how Le Sserafim's fashion/aesthetic is put together. And I'm not someone who's into shopping with/for women or stuff like that. Uniforms (well, I never liked that) and overly-themed outfits (like the goofy/hybrid or half-constructed jackets) have gone way outside my own taste. That's going on, while Yunjin is here with a revealed thong.

class:y's song is solid, and does well in showing the group's potential imo. the show had a lot of talent and, sort of unusual for a survival show, really favoured vocalists over dancers (5 out of 7 were in the vocal position, 1 of the 2 dancers shot up to 1st in online votes after a vocal perf) so it's great that their debut song shows that off. contrast this with kep1er which has an insane dance line but mid choreo for their debut.

also, really impressed by how much they've improved since the show, for a group with next to no formal training under an agency prior.

they're from a non-produce survival show, and they're effectively under mbk so the deck is stacked against them, but i hope they get more attention in the future!
