What's the criteria for something to be a "mass shooting"?

I know it's a problem but I am just a little incredulous at that statistic. I know the general popular opinion of what constitutes a mass shooting seems to be a person who walks into a place and starts shooting indiscriminately ending up with several casualties.

There's definitely been a few of those this year. But 200?

Don't these statistics also include like gang shootings and other situations that aren't typically referred to as "mass shootings" by most people though? For most people "any more than 1 person shot" isn't what a mass shooting is.

GVA uses any incident where 3 or more people were shot, IIRC. There's no other bounding criteria, which is why their estimates tend to be the highest out of groups tracking these statistics. Technically if nobody dies, or it's a domestic issue, or whatever GVA still counts it. That can throw some people off since the traditional use of "mass shooter" didn't count things like gang violence.

IMO, if it doesn't involve random people being drawn into it by being in the wrong place at the wrong time, I'd hesitate to call it a mass shooting. Some like workplace shootings would still qualify but domestic violence and gang violence I wouldn't count.
