why is this RPG so highly regarded? Sure the Esper system was innovating at the time, but the actual combat gameplay is a snooze fest. I finished the Zozo area and dropped the game there

I'm not sure why but I could never get into the game. I had no problems playing 5, 7, 8, or 9...but FF6 just never clicked with me. I think I started the game 3-4 times, got 5-10 hours into the game, and then randomly stopped playing each time.

A few reasons.

Its scale was unprecedented. The sheer amount of optional content and secrets went almost unmatched in console JRPGs for an entire generation.

It found a good balance between allowing players to customise characters and still having clear roles for them. You say the combat is a snooze fest, but I can't comprehend why you would think that when there are so many options with different character and team setups.

The story is nothing special, but the game creates an effective atmosphere. The director had a clear vision for the world of the game and the tone is consistent throughout, in aesthetic and narrative.

im mashing Edgar's crossbow move and Sabin's SRK-input, and they're obliterating everything on the screen. I already put like 10 hours in the game and have encountered zero required strategy so far. Customization and team selection doesn't matter when you're killing everything so easily

This is why. The crossbow is massively op early game. It drops off drastically later, but its famously an early game crutch.

The Final Fantasy series is one of the pillars of my childhood for better or worse, but I think if you're coming in to the SNES and PS1 era titles 20+ years later without the nostalgia the cracks are really going to show.

That said, even if they might not be good or fun games anymore they're definitely important games that are the foundations for what came after.

Personally i like the game but i can understand how others wont. RPGs are boring for most people and there is something about FF6 though. Perhaps the drab colour scheme makes want to put it down sometimes.

Everyone talks about FF6 like it's the greatest game ever made. I played it for the first time in the mid 00s expecting this super amazing god tier game and I was sorely disappointed. I feel like people who say FF6 is the best game ever just have nostalgia glasses on. The OST is good but I don't really care for the rest of the game. It's like a middle of the road FF game for me.

Compared to other RPGs of the era, FF6 at least gave each character a unique fighting style.
