Sometimes, the soy-rizo kinda slaps. But I don't feel like a fat piece of shit after eating it, so there goes some of the appeal.

Eh, youre not really missing out.

Theyre nice as a time to time kind of thing. But youre going to end up saving much more money and be in better health by eating unprocessed plant food.

I tried a meatless diet for a week in college. I understand the benefits and those that go for it.

In the end, I like burgers too much and don't mind being at a higher risk of heart disease because of it.

Pretty much this. I get the appeal of eating healthier, but it's simply not a concern of mine. I like meat, and soda, and lots of other crap that isn't good for me too much.

I was vegetarian from like '03-'10, and pescatarian from like '11-'15 (with rare exceptions like when I'd get grass-fed beef like twice a year from the farmer's market).

Now I eat everything and almost anything (aside from bugs and organ meats) - although most of my protein comes from eggs, fish, and poultry. I still order vegetarian entrees from restaurants pretty frequently, and I still occasionally crave like Quorn or Boca spicy chickies, I'll use tempeh if I'm making homemade salads, and I don't drink dairy milk.
Being vegetarian was never difficult, and I'm sure being vegan is way easier nowadays -- just how much mock cheese has advanced over the last decade is insane. I remember when it was plastic-like and wouldn't even melt.

I like Beyond Burgers. They make em with pea protein instead of soy and they're very good. I like them enough that when I'm in the mood for a burger it's a toss up whether I get a real beef burger or a BB.

Not really. As long as you eat a healthy, balanced diet and keep sugar and processed food to a minimum you'll likely be fine.

I think the steady rise in cost for meat products also has something to do with it. Meat is more expensive.

Maybe for cooking at home, depending on where you live, obviously some places are still food deserts, but from my experience a lot of the time vegetarian meals like beyond burgers cost more than meat..and all the cheapest places to eat are still very much largely carnivorous.

A number of people going vegan as it is dont even take Vitamin B, let alone have a dedicated supplement stack. Moving away from eating ultra-processed meats and hydrogenated vegetable oils via fast food to veganism in the form of ultra-processed vegan fast food options and vegan meat substitutes or vegan approved food like Oreos isnt really healthier.

I am fully in support of vegetarian diets, and I do believe they're very sustainable. But in my experiences it's rarely "health reasons" why people go vegetarian or vegan, and it's usually politically motivated or animal rights motivated. In any case, though - just about any restrictive diet, even those that aren't sustainable, at least teach a person short-term how to be conscientious of what they're eating; even something awful like keto that should never be done long-term at least teaches a person to pay attention to what they're eating.
I can say from the years I was vegetarian I tried so many things and learned so many things that I never would have had I just thoughtlessly continued being an omnivore. I probably wouldn't have gotten into food activism, and I probably never would've started working in dietetics. I never would've eaten okra, swiss chard, kohlrabi, jicama, dandelion greens, chickpeas, lentils, etc.

Sorry, I cant get past the smell. Its literally one of those things you can taste by smelling it. I almost threw up once watching someone eat the meatless burger from BK. It smells like microwaved cat food.

Plus, its packed full of estrogen and all types of hormones and chemicals that you dont get eating real meat.

I would rather not eat any type of meat than eat that soy crap.
I can't stand the smell of impossible foods either. Finally found someone else, glad I'm not crazy. The others aren't like that.

Meat is packed full of estrogen (the mammal kind, like us) and chemicals.

Plant estrogens in soy attach to a different receptor than animal estrogen and have no feminizing effects. Beers hops do though.

Beyond meat and many others are pea protein based and completely soy free.

Seriously, if I was interested in trying a vegan diet where/how do you start without shocking your body and feeling like crap?

Going 0 to 100 just isnt a viable way for some people.

I don't know, I've always had a very simple diet. So when I eat less meat, instead of a basic dinner of rice, beans, and chicken, I just did rice, beans, lentils, tofu.

Veganism can be difficult due to eggs, cheese, sauces, but there are substitutes for that.

I don't know, I feel like people overcomplicate it at times

True, but the reason many people continue to eat them is because they like them. It's not like I can't live without meat or soda. I simply prefer not to. Helps that I stay in fairly good shape despite my eating habits, so I'm even less concerned health risks.

It doesnt shock me, but me and my family tend to kill enough deer to eat off of for the majority of the year.

We also fish, so the majority of meat that I eat is good meat that has not been injected with steroids.

Hunting is also good for the soul, something about being out in the woods hunting animals just gives you that primal rush that you cant get anywhere else.

I find enough roadkill deer in the winter to eat through the year. Where else can you get guilt free meat? Better yet, very very young guilt free meat. I'd never kill a baby deer but last year I got two deer in the 4-8 month old range and the meat was so young soft and tasty. Don't get a lot but it's still 10-20 pounds. It was going to rot on the side of the road...so not only is it guilt free from the start, but you get to feel good knowing you put it to use.

And no, I don't "hunt" by trying to hit them intentionally. Never have hit and deer and never want to. Feel bad enough hitting a squirrel.

this tbh.

everyone talks about 'vegan food' as if it's some obtuse concept. it's the same food you eat, minus an ingredient or two.

Well the problem is because of my metabolism I am used to just eating anything I want as much as I want, Ive always been like that.

So when I actually try to cut out bad stuff just for the sake of my body internally I almost always feel foggy headed and irritable. Its like junk withdrawals or something.

Do people not realize that conventionally grown meat (which is the kind most people buy because it's cheap) is full of chemicals and hormones and other nasty stuff too?

Just putting that out there for all those people who keep saying meat-less burgers are full of estrogen.
