50 chapters in. Why is this series so beloved? Seems like nothing has really happened at all in it so far.

It starts slow, but it gets good 200 chapters in! You gotta keep going!

I actually have no idea. I've never watched it.

I was never able to get into it either. Everyone says to watch it at least up to Arlong or whatever but even that really wasn't anything special to me

It's ok, you don't need to get it, because the people that love it REALLY get it to make up for you not getting it

Spoilers: Obviously people who don't like shonen anime are not going to like One Piece. Or people that don't like long running anime with still unrevealed mysteries that have persisted since the late 90s. It's our soap opera, sorry you don't get it. Like for real, we wish you understood because then we could share the excitement we get when new chapter is released.

It does pick up the pace, but it is still a slow moving series as far as the overall story goes. It also becomes more serious as the series progresses. Early on it is similar to the original Dragon Ball while the later seasons are much more Dragon Ball Z.

I stopped reading/watching years ago and I probably won't pick it back up until the series ends.

As someone who has not seen the anim, nor read the manga, but only played the Musou games, the characters are the fun part. If you do not like them, then One Piece is not for you.

Exactly 50? Read two more chapters, then I talk about one of its strengths.

I can't stand One Piece either and I know three things about it.

  1. It gets good after the first decade.
  2. It's the single greatest anime ever created.
  3. "Nakama" is a word so jam-packed with deep meaning that it literally cannot be translated you baka gaijin.

Nobody says any of that. The third one hasn't been a thing for almost 10 years.

Yeah out of the old "big 3" One Piece was the one I took the longest to get into. BLEACH and Naruto are a lot more accessible at the beginning and really grab your attention. I was really into BLEACH but tried starting One Piece before I even got into Naruto, but I dropped it after a few chapters. The whole pirate thing wasn't doing it for me compared to cool ninjas or badass spirit powers. So I did Naruto instead and caught up by the time Pain was in action.

I only tried OP again in late 2016, nearly a decade after I first tried, because BLEACH ended. Naruto was already done before that too so I wanted something to read. This time I promised to stick with it and boy I'm glad. I ended up liking it way more than Naruto though it never got me as hyped as BLEACH. I started getting into it in Baratie Arc which is right around where you at now. Things only get better from there especially around chapter 100 when a certain evil organisation is introduced.

After a while, people just get really attached to the characters. And I think One Piece does a really good job of building up the main group and giving them all great arcs.

Here's my thing:

Jojo is good by chapter 45.

Naruto is good by chapter 33

My Hero Academia is good by chapter 22.

50 into One Piece and it's still not compelling or interesting. It seems more like a gag manga than an adventure manga.

Okay so I think I have a good take on it, not liking it myself after initially reading quite a few arcs in.

I picked it back up a decade later and lovvved it. I couldnt tell you why exactly, it doesnt just "get good" all of a sudden. I think being told it was good rather then experiencing it myself was the problem. It was actually good all a long, I just was too impatient to get to the "good part".

My only suggestion is MAKE SURE you read the colored version of the mange because it looks a lot better then just black and white pages. If you need to, drop if for five years and come back where you left off.

I got hooked when I began the Skypiea Arc, which I initially began by watching the anime, but was so fed up with the slow pacing that I eventually switched over to the manga.

It was pretty alright right away honestly. The main character carries it a lot at first. A somewhat typical shonen main character: really dumb, but good guy who fights well. Zoro carries too in the early bits I suppose. They have some good moments fighting Buggy and some other parts.

The series you compared it to being "good" in the first 40-ish chapters are no better. In some aspects they're definitely worse. If nothing appeals to you in OP by the first 30 or so you may as well quit because you really just don't get it somehow.
