He thinks it hurt his career as well, at the time. And honestly don't doubt it, wasn't nearly as accepted back then and "my best friends wedding" was the only thing he really got after coming out.

He was never really "in" though, so the gay best friend roles kind of pigeonholed him from the start. I'm going to guess he just got bored with acting.
