The gameplay is good, the plot and character interactions are better.

Don't get frustrated if it's too hard at the beginning. Try different weapons until you find the one than clicks with your playstyle.

This is good news for me! I'm one of those morons that likes "ultra-hard, you're gonna die all the time" titles (Binding of Isaac, Meatboy, bullet hell shooters and so on).
Seems like I've made the right purchase!

Be patient and be fine with dying. Focus on the long term upgrades instead of short term wins for now, so collect as much purple tears, gems and keys as you can.

focus on purple currency before anything and jewels after.

you might as well get the permanent unlocks asap since you'll go through the game an absolute shit ton before you see it all and chances are you might even quit before then.

Yeah this. As weird as it sounds to say it, dying is good. The more you die, the more you can come back stronger. Its why the game replay value is ridiculous.

Honestly just go in and get a feel for things first. The game does a really good job of gradually introducing you to concepts and making it so you acclimate to things at a pretty reasonable rate.

Also, I dunno if I'd call the homoerotic aspects undertones, because they're pretty overt. At least as long as you keep at it.
