Current Events > My friend died after abusing drugs for about 25 years

I knew him since high school. He played football in high school, and he got a full ride scholarship for math to a UC. However, he started using meth hardcore and pretty much any other pills and drugs he could get his hands on. He ended up getting arrested and convicted for check fraud.

I don't know all the details except that he was allowed to serve his time on weekends and continue to go to college on his scholarship. However, around final exam time, the Judge got pissed at him for some reason that I'm not privy to, and the Judge ordered him to serve the remainder of his time straight, which caused him to miss his final exams. As a result, he lost his scholarship and never got out of our hometown.

He spiraled deeper into drugs and never got out. I got the news that he went into the ICU (again) for sepsis. I finally got confirmation that he passed away. It's odd, because I was talking to him just 2 weeks ago since I still talk to his mom and sister from time to time.

His sister's ex bf also died after decades of abusing meth and other drugs. His body was found underneath a bridge in our hometown last summer. She found a picture of the three of us plus one other friend. That other friend and I are the last two standing from that picture.

Don't do drugs, kids.

It's all good. I'm very thick skinned, and I have people in real life that I talk to about it. I'm honestly not even that sad about it. I'm just kind of shocked that he's actually gone even though I wasn't expecting him to live very long.

Yeah, this guy came from a relatively poor, single mom family, but he was brilliant when it came to math. You could give him any two numbers up to like 5 digits for each number, and he could multiply them in his head. If he had stayed away from drugs, I definitely think he would've made something of himself.

Well, he was Italian, but he lawyered up. I never met his dad, but his mom was a nurse who worked insane hours. His mom is really cool, but she was rarely around since she was the sole breadwinner.

my condolences. meth is an absolutely terrible drug. i have or had a former best friend, a half nephew, and a brother in law of my older brother all fuck up their lives or lose their lives because of meth, so i can relate.

Yeah, I've seen some people ruin their lives with heroin, but meth is the drug that really fucked up my hometown.

As somebody who struggled with substance abuse in the past, im sorry.

I really wish we would stop locking up drug users. Putting drug users in a cage isn't going to help them get better. They need real help, rehabilitation. Nobody ever stops to wonder why people start using drugs. These clowns think it all starts out as somebody doing it "for fun" and getting addicted. It's not. Most people who start doing drugs do it because they don't know what to do and want to numb themselves from feelings and escape their reality.

I am so sorry your friend has passed away. It's not easy, especially not when so much of society just chalks users up as bum ass junkies who should be in a pen. They just don't get it.

Yeah, I consider myself libertarian in general, so I support legalization of all drugs. But that doesn't mean I advocate people using drugs.

Damn, it really sucks that judge ordered him to serve that time straight. Maybe he beats those addictions and finishes with those scholarships. Of course I don't know any of the details there, but having him in jail over drugs never sits right with me there. Could've saved his life by not doing that. Unless it was the fraud there.

People doing intermittent time have conditions on their sentence and if they don't fulfill it or breach them, a judge will collapse their sentence to straight time.

Sorry, man. I've known a lot of people who have struggled with drug abuse and I myself struggle with alcohol abuse. Only one of my friends that I'm aware of died from it but plenty of others were significantly harmed and certainly everyone's relationships were harmed. It's really sad.

I have siblings who struggle with addiction, to this and other stuff. Always hoping I won't have to hear get a call about that one day while we're all still relatively young (under 50)

Yea dont do drugs

If anything, do drugs but in a better way. There's nothing wrong with smoking some crack cocaine or crystal meth, but you have to be reasonable about it.
