The Los Angeles Unified School District will cut one third of its police positions and will replace them with climate coaches after months of calls from activists to defund the police program, numerous sources reported.

I guess we will see how this works out, I mean keeping cops would bevok if they are ordered no violence against minors

I've never been in a school that had cops so I'm trying to wrap my head around it all while having no experience....

Why does it have to be cops in the school? Why not find some big tall intimidating looking dudes to break up fights and stuff. Has to be cheaper.

What can a cop do in the school that a regular guy couldn't is my question I guess. I never hear stories about cops shooting students who got in a fight so why do they need to be armed?

Yeah, same. We had a couple of security guards in high school (and it was a big school 1,500 students or so), but thats it.

My stepmothers kids went to school in a rough part of LA.

One time before they got married she was visiting us and I got home from school to find her on the phone crying because her sons best friend had been shot and died in her sons arms.

A lot of those schools arent what you think of when you think of high school.

Ill just leave it at that.

All my schools had a school resource officer. They weren't dangerous schools and it wasn't some ominous thing. For the most part it just seemed like they were there to make everyone "feel" safer if that makes any sense, and the students all knew them in the same way they knew school staff. I assume they are there to step in to make arrests where needed (like for drugs or other paraphernalia), but i doubt they are needed most of the time

That's kind of what I was asking. Why not let the police be on the street where he's needed and we don't have to pay him 50,000 bucks a year. We can pay someone 15 bucks an hour to just look tough if it has the same effect.

My resource officer was really cool and loved by everyone. He would answer all suspicious law related questions and would teach boxing to students after school

My neighboring school's officer is in prison because he put his finger in the buttholes of students
