I dislike them. I used to tolerate them a couple years ago, but at this point I don't think I can name a song of theirs I'd willingly listen to. That's not to say they're bad - their songs just clash really hard with what my brain likes

Im pretty sure hating The Beatles is the ultimate example of not liking something because its popular.

Their evolution as a band is arguably the most remarkable ever for any musician.

Still my favorite band after all these years, I have to admit. They never really mastered any particular sound, but the breadth of their experimentation really captured my imagination at a young age and never left me feeling bored. Their influence arguably spread beyond music, too - there's a lot of proto Monty Python-style humor on display in 'Help' and 'Yellow Submarine,' and I don't think it's any coincidence that Paul and George were big fans of MP when they were just starting out.

While I perfectly understand that they're not everyone's cup of tea and wouldn't rag on someone for disliking or simply not caring about them, saying the Beatles 'suck' or are 'overrated' pretty much marks you as musically ignorant, and there's a very high chance that whichever musicians you do worship will tell you the exact same thing.

I have a lot of respect for their work. I'm not really a fan of their music per say. I think Paul McCartney and John Lennon's solo stuff was often more enjoyable than their Beatles stuff. The only Beatles song I truly like is Strawberry Fields Forever. I get that it's a different era and a different style of music from what I'm into. I make no pretense that my preferences are better or worse.

I always use the Beatles as an example of changing trends. There will likely never again be a band with that much combined talent. And no record label in the world is worried about that because bands don't write Beatles songs anymore. Just like no one in Hollywood is competing with films like Casablanca or Citizen Kane. One of the reasons we have changing trends is because it's easier and more profitable to be different and set a new trend than it is to try and best whoever is on top of current trends.

On an unrelated note, I just found out the other day that the Beatles apparently have a standing contractual clause that only their cartoon likenesses are allowed to have merchandise in the form of toys. You can't buy realistic Beatles action figures, but you can buy toys based off of the Yellow Submarine animated movie.

Also my mom used to sing I Will to me when I was a baby apparently.

David Bowie is the only other one from that era that comes close. Maybe pink Floyd but they didn't change as drastically and as frequently.

From current times I would say flaming lips and animal collective fall into this category.

I dont think theres a band in history that has ever changed faces or made it cool to experiment like The Beatles did. They were literally the bridge between artist and people in which people could feel free to present themselves as characters and more importantly were able to dress up music in such a way that each track had a standing personality different from each-other.

Imagine if cubism had met the painting inside of the Sistine chapel - thats basically what the The Beatles did for music.. all within one generation to boot

All within six years bruh

It's truly remarkable. And they were also responsible for innovations in recording technology because they could get abbey road engineers to invent new stuff. Not to mention the fact that a band writing and performing their own songs was actually really unique. Before that you were lucky to have one good sinfee/songwriter, let alone a whole group who could do baeicslly everything (other than arranging).

It's not really that weird. They completely changed the landscape of pop music. They are undoubtedly the most influential musical act of the 20th century.

It's okay to not enjoy their music--I don't like Bach all that much. But I can't deny how important Bach was for all of music.
