He keeps scratching at a door frame and its starting to ruin it. He has a scratching post that he uses but still insists on the door frame at times.

He hates water like most do so I was thinking about filling up a spray bottle and spray him away when he acts up.

No, it's water and it works great as a training tool. They get annoyed, lick it off for 5 minutes and proceed to go back to what it was they were doing that got them squirt to begin with until they eventually learn.

When kids have water gun fights outside in the summer is that mass assault?

You don't even have to pick up the bottle just point your finger and make the noise the bottle makes

Cats are smart, he/she will learn quick. I've had cats my entire life and using this method it typically only takes a couple persistent days.

This is how you teach them without harming them, a spray of water is harmless and as someone said at some point all you will have to do is hold up the bottle.

Did the same thing with my dog to teach him not to do certain things.

I found this spray at a local hardware shop that you can put on your couch/bed (where my cat use to scratch) and he doesnt touch it now. Hell still rub up against it but never claws it. Have to reapply every fortnight or so, but best $10 Ive spent.
