I didn't read anything except the OP and a couple posts after my first one.

And no I don't really watch a whole lot of anime these days.

The implication isn't that Japanese censors dislike the game because of a Chinese lead. It's that there likely would've been more lenient restrictions had the lead been Japanese.

You're reading way too much into that statement and in the wrong direction. There's plenty of Japanese media which presents Chinese characters in a positive light.

Japanese games made in Japan with Japanese leads are censored in Japan. NiOh is censored in Japan. Ninja Gaiden is censored in Japan. The list goes on. This isn't based on ethnicity of characters in games. Just like China censors most Japanese media for domestic release. It isn't because the media is Japanese, Chinese media faces severe restrictions too.

Uhhh..... That's a weird example considering the main Character is a white dude named William. I wouldn't qualify that as a Japanese lead.

Nah. Just Nioh. That's why I specifically mentioned Nioh and not the others.

Japan made an entire series of games where you are an American shooting down Imperial Japanese planes in World War II. The games were popular in Japan and America. You may have heard of one:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1943:_The_Battle_of_Midway

In Japan, Game Machine listed 1943: Midway Kaisen in their July 15, 1987 issue as being the most-popular arcade game at the time.[4]Game Machine also listed 1943 Kai: Midway Kaisen in their August 1, 1988 issue as being the sixteenth most-popular arcade game at the time.[5]

That one always struck me as odd. Even in the Japanese version, you're playing as an American fighter taking down the Japanese planes that were often referred to as "cigars."
