Hope I still have a job tomorrow.

He checked in no problem. Then came back down about 15 minutes later, yelling at me because his room was near a dog. He flung his keys across the counter and told me the whole place smells like ass and asked what I was going to do about it. So, I offered him a new room. He cussed at me about not putting him near any dogs. So I politely told him that it is a pet friendly hotel and he should expect to see pets. He smarted back that I made my choice(I don't even know what he meant).

Anyway, I was getting pretty steamed, but was still polite. So I told him where the next room would be, but he interrupted me to shout about not being near any dogs room. So I flung his keys across the counter like he did to me, and said there ya go. I didn't mean for them to fall in the floor, but they did. He demanded that I come around, pick them up, and hand them to him. I refused, and he tried to stare me down. So I stared back. He picked them up and said "what a dick wad" as he walked off. I responded with _I know, I'm looking right at it" and pointed to him.

I'm half tempted to go ahead and kick him out. It'd save us some trouble as I'm certain he'll get a free room out of this and I'll at least get written up. But jeez, that guy was a complete and total asshole. I'm still pissed.

Generally, I wouldn't have done either of the things that I did(toss the keys, insult him back). I usually just take that behavior, which is why I get rated as one of the better employees... But this guy set me off.

Eh, I'd say it was less standing up for myself and more of me causing a scene. There's dozens of other ways I could've stood up for myself without causing a problem.

Nah, customers need to be put in their place sometimes. Believe me, I got out of retail and never looked back because of how annoying some people are with their tendency to sniff their own farts all time.

Oh, I'm aware. My manager helped me out with one a few days ago. She got an attitude with him, and told me later that she wanted take her shoe off and slap him with it.

Yeah, some of these guests are absolutely ridiculous. I'm generally really good at handling situations like that... not tonight though. Guess I was fed up.

Yeah in retail, some customers come in looking for trouble.

They also act like an assbitch, not simply because that's who they are, but so you'll be more likely to screw up and in turn they'll be more likely to get their way.

Man you're safe. Customers can be real dicks. You kept professional for the most part but you're only human. This customer sounds like he could treat people like shit and get his own way. Fuck them. Well, I forgot who my replacement was tonight. Turns out the front desk manager is working tonight. I told him about it and he said "obviously that's not how it should have been handled, but I have no problems with that." So, I think I'm ok. The main manager will be in tomorrow though, it could go either way with her.

But I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. Unless he turns out to have been a secret shopper type deal. I've been told that happens sometimes and they try to be as frustrating as possible. >_>
Either way, it's out of my hands now.

You have two options...

1) Take the abuse and get stepped on. Rest knowing you have 100% job security. But the effects of eating shit showing up years later through mental issues.

2) Do what you did, and retain your sanity.

Edit: Okay. Let me not try to sound like such a negative nancy here.

A lot of companies, including hotels, care only about providing customer service and are completely willing to walk all over the backs of their employees to provide it. If your manager is the kind of person who realizes that some customers are unreasonable or trying to scam for free stuff then you should be okay. If not then they'll see your actions as belligerent and having cost them a customer and/or negative review which they will GLADLY take out on you. They may even call him up and try to offer him a free stay or something else 'in the name of customer service' because they fear negative reviews so much that they'd sooner fire an employee than dismiss a potential customer. That this person likely was a scammer trying to get free board from you and will likely never return is irrelevant.

Like I said though, this is assuming your boss is the kind of person who doesn't care about their employees and only cares about customer service. If this is not true you should be more than safe or let off with a finger-wagging at worst.

i think the only time i ever actually fired back at a customer was when one was being very rude and yelling about a return or something and he said that he'd spent $100 in gas to drive to the store and i was just like "there are definitely other walmarts if you drove that far"

my boss was like "you weren't wrong but don't do that again" lol

I would apparently get snappy with certain customers at one of my jobs. I would just say whatever to them. Like when a lady wanted her Bumbo she sold to us back, and I told her she could buy it from us. The owner was there and told us to just give it back. Or when a lady was saying she would wait all night for her clothes, and I said, "I can wait all night, too. I close tonight."

Maybe it's a culture thing but over here customers know full well they'll get a proper telling off if they come with attitude. Depends how far they willing to push their luck. I used to be a bank teller and dealt with 100s of people a day. Inevitably you'd get assholes who came with every intention of looking for trouble. Funnily enough in my case they were nearly all men. I rarely got a bad woman customer but the girl tellers sure did. So there was definitely a gender dynamic thing going on. My strategy for dealing with them if they weren't satisfied with my answers bout what state their accounts were in was to pause them right in their tracks and go call my supervisor in person.

Okay, everything is fine. Just got to work about half an hour ago. The morning shift person asked about it, and I started explaining to her. She asked what room it was and I told her, so she ran off to tell the GM something.

Then the GM called me into her office and had me explain. But she was laughing through it all. Especially when I told her what I said to him, she burst out laughing. Said she was proud of me for not taking it from him, but to try not to be hateful if I can. Said that could be my warning.

She also said that I'm the most patient and well mannered employee she has, and that if I got pushed to that point then that guy must've been really bad.

Edit: The guy apparently didn't even file a complaint any way. Maybe he will through corporate, but they said no one mentioned it this morning.

lol, my other coworker was there today. The one who thinks she's queen of the world. GM told her that if it was her that said that to him, she'd be in serious hot water. You could see it in her face that she was totally insulted by that. I think her ego got knocked down a few pegs.

I once walked into a customer while I was turning and knocked her flat on her ass. She was really short and I didn't see her in time. I just about shit a cube. She thought it was hilarious.

I don't miss retail.

The biggest problem is with most customer-facing jobs is that as a drone, your job is to say "no" and a manager's job is to say "yes".

So you end up with a situation where you're expected to follow the policy you've been handed, and the instant Karen gets squirrelly, your manager will be summoned to bend over for whatever ridiculous demand an unreasonable customer has, AND as an added bonus, you get reprimanded for enforcing company policy, and Karen gets a gift card for her inconvenience.
