my new job told me they have a committee that meets to determine my pay. the guy on the phone interview, who i guess is my boss now, told me id probably get the middle of the scale, around 67k.

looking at glassdoor, salarys for the same job say 43k and 59k. theres only 2 and i dont know when they're from.

im kinda worried hes going to get selective amnesia and forget he ever said 67k and lowball me

but i dont know how to haggle. i remember once i tried haggling in the Elder scrolls 3 morrowwind and the npc attacked me.

they're going to kick my ass CE!

First and foremost, find out if your salary is even negotiable. If you work for a large company, chances are it's not negotiable since everything is structured.

If you find out that your salary is negotiable, then negotiate away. Don't just say "I want more money", or start listing off your problems "I need more money because I have a kid"; explain what you can do for the company and why that is worth the money (e.g., speak up your achievements, what you can do, what you will do).

Treat it like a pawn shop deal. Go higher than you're actually looking for. That way if (when?) they knock it down a little, you're actually getting what you really want.

This is not a good idea. You should know your worth and value based on market; don't go above that, or you'll look like someone who doesn't know what they're talking about. If what you say and what number you give out is reasonable, you will get it.

Let's say you're worth in the $75,000 range. You think they're gonna look at you some kind of way if you instead ask for $77,500 or $80,000? It's called a range for a reason.

That logic doesn't make sense. If you're saying that the job is not worthy and the employer will fuck with you, you saying an unreasonably high number will just get laughed out, because they will screw you and just get another employee.

Your post said treat it like a pawn shop deal. A ~7% increase is not a pawn shop deal. I agree with you that if you're worth $75k, won't hurt to ask for $80k.

I didn't say an unreasonably high number. just a bit over what you're willing to settle for. it seems like you agree.

Yup, agreed. To me, "pawn shop deal" = unreasonable, since they always low ball you, and you have to play that stupid game.

I dont haggle correctly. I say a number, the other person says a different number. Then I just repeat what I said the first time. It seems to throw a lot of people off since I'm not playing by the proper rules.

Also the first rule of negotiation is to not negotiate against yourself. Let them make the offer first.
