Yep they were pterosaurs and the only species of them we are aware of is the Pterodactyl.

Actually, either way is fine because as extinct animals theres no context where a living animal is being referenced, and thus there is no actual confusion to be had when you interchange are and were.

Pterodactyl can both refer to living ones from millions of years ago or to the dead fossils of them that we have now, and in the context of speaking about the species in general, saying "are" to describe them is fine.

In other words, dont be a grammar nazi if you dont understand that, in casual conversation especially, English is a loose language that doesnt lose understanding if certain words are used in place of others.

Context is what matters and no reasonable person reads "are" in this context and gets confused unless they literally dont understand what dinosaurs and pterosaurs are in the first place and how they relate to us.
