I'm enjoying the following:

  • Story
  • Setting
  • Characters
  • vibes, man
I'm not enjoying:
  • hold circle to win combat
I hear in Windows Edition you can switch between characters? But I haven't seen that yet.

Anyone have general tips or ideas of what to expect?

The ability to switch characters is in their ability trees somewhere. Not that deep in.

The combat gets more complex as you get further in, but you will still be holding that button a lot.

There's a really good game in FFXV somewhere. It really just needed more time to cook.

From what I've heard it accumulated that time 2 years after release via patches and DLC and it's "as good as it's gonna get" right now. I'm definitely enjoying the game so far, but holding circle is already getting old.

you can tell that the game was rebooted several times because it's a mishmash of half-baked ideas that don't really work with eachother

i did enjoy it tho

why do you say that?

having playing (most of) ff7r before this game, i can definitely see where they refined and polished these sorts of ideas. ffxv is almost like a half-baked ff7r

I played it. I enjoyed it. But outside of some key things. It isn't really an overly memorable experience. It's literally just fun for the duration you spend with the game, honestly.

hmm

so the thing that intrigued me about the game was the way it looked and the fact that it's like a "roadtrip with the boys" which is kinda unique. i'm playing it for those sorts of vibrations and so far it's what i expected/hoped for

These things.

They really just spent years making trailers that didn't even make it into the final product, scrapped everything a few times, and then ended up releasing whatever they could finish by the deadline. It feels like a Frankenstein's monster of a game, and it's honestly impressive they actually managed to released anything playable at all.

The game's not awful, but it's super janky and unfinished, even after all the years worth of DLC and patches to "complete" it. And yeah, the gameplay being "hold down X to win" is def a point against it -- it makes the combat super braindead.

The roadtrip vibe is nice, though. And the characters are fun enough even if they're not really that fleshed out at all.

It nails that theme on the head. That's literally the best part of the game. They made those characters feel alive. But I'm not putting them on any character list in terms of memorability.

I think what really killed the game for me was the overall plot. It's a mess and largely not explained.

The reason he says that is because the original director was basically forced to leave the project and move to Kingdom Hearts 3, because he was taking forever to actually finish the story. The director who replaced him, Tabata never worked on a main series Final Fantasy game prior, and it showed.

He kept the characters but scrapped most of the story surrounding them and the side characters. Your going to meet a bunch of characters who seem like 1 time side characters but have a lot more backstory in Kingsglaive and the short anime which was written by the original director.

Since you played FF7, let me put it this way. You remember how the character Jessie suddenly has a big role in the remake, despite being an extremely minor character in the original? Reverse it a few times for different characters.

I wouldn't say it being Tabata's first FF is why it came out the way it did. Nomura spent nearly decade trying to make something just too ambitious. It wasn't even a real game. Just concepts and ideas. Square tossed it over and told Tabata to make a game out of all that. It just needed more time to be made into an actual game for how large the scope of it was.

Worse. See aforementioned posts commenting on the fact that a lot of plot info is tucked away in a different game and other media.

The gameplay and traveling bros is present throughout 90% of the game (no worries there). But man...when you reach certain events...just...brace yourself. All I have to say.

I've heard the complaint that the plot info is located elsewhere, but i have a friend who said he played the game blind and thought it was fine

But even so, the general story was already laid out. There were decisions made, that to me just made absolutely no sense. Outside the main party, pretty much every other character is miswritten. It's why I tell everyone to watch Kingsglaive before they start playing the game. To give context to certain characters and why you should care about them.

The two things that really frustrate me about this game are Ardyn and Lunafreya. Neither were given enough time to develop as characters. I wish they had pushed Iris as the main love interest instead of Lunafreya, because we weren't given any reason to care about her as a character. Makes me wish we had Stella instead of Lunafreya.

Have you played FF12 Gir?

Go look at early trailers. Noctis' dad was an asian gangster at one point.

All I'm going to say is that there is a character who looks kind of like Sephiroth in the game. Your going to absolutely love him. It's one of the few things in this game I adore. Meanwhile.... the main antagonist is my least favorite character in the series.... because I've seen Summons show up more times than he does....

That's why after you meet him, and you will know exactly who he is, go watch Kingsglaive. It gives a lot of information about him so you aren't wondering wtf is going on.

Glad you enjoy the setting...cause thats all you get. The story also sorta dissipates into nothing. Combat was the least of the problems...except the cant die as long as you have 99 potions which makes the difficulty non existent.
