New video released in Rochester, New York, shows a 9-year-old Black girl waiting handcuffed in agony for 16 minutes in the back seat of a police car after having been pepper-sprayed by police. City officials suspended police officers who were seen in an initial video released Sunday spraying the face of the distraught and handcuffed child. In the newly released body-cam footage, the girl can be heard wailing and asking for her father as a white female officer tells her an ambulance has been slowed by the snowy roads. Officer, please dont do this to me, she says at one point. You did it to yourself, hon, the officer responds.

Does anyone have a defense for this? Usually someone pops in and gives one even when there shouldn't be one to give. Maybe we need to wait for all the facts?

Blah blah blah, something about comply with the cop's direction and you won't get hurt. Never mind that this is a 9 year old child and it shouldn't take cuffs OR pepper spray to control them. Most adults are physically capable of getting a kid that young into a car. If you aren't strong enough to do it, you might not be cut out for that line of work.

Nah. Pigs are actually capable of being decent creatures actually. I used to work with pigs at a school owned farm in high school. For this animal science class I took. Those pigs were nice actually. They were smart too. Smarter than most cops

Like what the hell happened in between all of that? I can understand if this was like a "scare the kid straight by yelling her she's going to jail" kind of thing, but why did they actually pepper spray her?

Per the newsweek article, the girl was threatening suicide and also stated an intent to kill her mother. Doesn't justify pepper spraying imo.

The problem is of the options to subdue someone who is a threat to themselves or others, pepper spray is certainly safer than a taser or physical restraint in terms of reducing the chance of injury. A teaser could be lethal and having adult cops manhandle a 9 year old could very easily result in broken bones or other serious injuries.

But this is a case where I think it's absolutely clear a mental health worker would have been better suited to the situation than a cop.

I agree that it's better than if they had tased her, but it definitely could have been handled better. But after reading why they pepper sprayed her, the cop is even more of an ass for saying "you did it to yourself" after. Like, the little girl was threatening to kill herself and that is what you say to her while she's in tears?

Much agreed. It's clear the police here were not trained in how to help someone going through a suicidal episode, and likely just made things much worse for this girl in the long run.
