trunk for changing a spare tire?

im worried the lug nuts keeping the wheels on need a special tool to make sure its on tight enough so they dont fall off. what are those called, torque something?

you can get a tool to balance the tires yourself, and you'll need some jack stands, but beyond that there's not really anything special about changing and rotating your tires yourself.

Yes you should get a torque wrench for your lug nuts if you're going to be taking the wheels off and on yourself. It's more about making sure you don't overtighten the nuts which can lead to damaging the nuts or wheel studs

is it even possible to hand over-tighten those lug nuts? i've seen jackasses do it with a pneumatic wrench but you'd have to really try to do it by hand.

Jack stands and a torque wrench for sure. I'd get four stands to prop up the front and rear of the car. Make sure you get the proper socket for your lug nuts and drive for your wrench. I tend to go 100 ft-lbs on each nut.
