You cant really be a real king if u dont have real friends that stands besides u through thicc and thins. A king must push forward for his nakama and change the perception of the world. One Piece is hailed for it's unbelievable amount of character development and depth of characters compared to other shonen. The only one dimensional character in the main cast would be Brook. Now if you said there's a bit of flanderisation going on then that's true, but over the course of the anime's history we've seen each character grow and change and show a lot of subtlety. I find it hard to understand this point compared to other things you could compare it to. Naruto is a one note character, natsu is a one note character, toriko is a one note character, Goku is a one note character, etc. People say Luffy is one note but he's incredibly unpredictable at times, which is cool. Ichigo is a two note character. He's either badass and untouchable or sad and pathetic. Nothing in between. and there's too much goofy kid random bullshit going on for it to be taken seriously. "Do you have some panties I could sniff?" Jfc.* This is exactly why people like one piece though. Bleach and Naruto were just far too serious all the damn time, and had no self awareness about what kind of show they are or who their audience is. Why should a show about teenage kids playing pirate be very serious? This is power up shonen nonsense. It should be silly. With that said, One Piece still provides emotional depth and truly sad moments and I think to a level that other shonens fail. It sets up characters to love and then knocks them down brutally. There's a lot of loss and bittersweet going on. There's romance and adventure. People cried over a boat. A boat! Also minor point but his gimmick is just that he would like to see pants, not sniff them. It has the worst artstyle in all of the anime world. Seriously. Its fucking awful. The art style is just gonna be a preference really. I really like it and prefer it over the cookie cutter anime style that nearly every other anime in this genre has. You could point out that it has really lazy animation at times and that would be true, but the latest arc in the anime is just pretty incredible animation wise, especially for a weekly anime. In fact there just aren't any other long running weekly anime that have animation this good. Spoilers, but I imagine you don't care about that, but check out this. It's actually unbelievable that they can eek out quality this good.
