http://www.justjared.com/2021/02/10/morgan-wallen-tells-fans-not-to-defend-him-in-new-apology-video-please-dont-i-was-wrong/

Morgan Wallen is speaking out for the second time amid the controversy surrounded a surfaced video where he was overheard saying a derogatory word.

Since the video went viral, the country singer has had his record deal suspended and was deemed ineligible for a high country honor.

Morgan first issued a short apology for his words, and is speaking out again and owning up to his actions.

The video you saw of me was me on hour 72 of 72 of a bender and thats not something Im proud of either, he shared in the Instagram video. I let so many people downIm not OK with thatI also accepted some invitations from some amazing Black organizations, executives and leaders to engage in some real and honest conversations.

Morgan added that while he is nervous about accepting the invites, the people he hurt had every right to step on my neck while I was down, to not show me any grace, but they did the exact opposite.

My words matter and that word can truly hurt a person, he continued. And at my core, thats not what Im OK with. Ive got many more things to learn but I already know that I dont want to add to any division. Our actions matter, our words matter, and I just want to encourage anyone watching please learn from my mistakes. There is no reason to downplay what I did. It matters.

Morgan also shared a message directly to his fans who are defending him amid the controversy: dont.

Lastly, I have one favor to ask. I appreciate those who still see something in me and have defended me, he told them. But for today, please dont. I was wrong. Its on me. I take ownership for this and I fully accept any penalties Im facing.

Some props to him for saying this at least

Obviously should have never said the word to begin with but he's at least taking responsibility for it which is getting rarer it seems

too often a public apology is "im sorry you were offended" or "im sorry but"
basically not real apologies

Saying "I was drunk" is usually an iffy excuse for when someone says something shitty, but still, good on him for actually owning up to it and not sounding defensive about it like many apologies.

probably people afraid of trying drugs and alcohol criticizing that. Human beings are incredibly primal at our base nature and drugs and booze can bring that out of us in ways that you cant imagine. And before you high and mighty types just blame it on them, Drugs and alcohol will never define a person I know too many good addicts/homeless who would give you their last $5 compared to sober homeowners afraid to drop pennies in a poor jar.

it makes no difference to the rest of the apology which seems sincere. He could have left it at the excuse and say he is sorry - he didnt have to directly confront his racist fanbase and tell them stop defending me because what I did was wrong. He didnt have to accept invitations into whoever is inviting him.

i look at that Star Wars woman and see the exact opposite someone who refuses to double down and Ill bet any apology is more akin to saying Im sorry youre offended by saying Im sorry my words hurt others

No, he's not. He's saying the bender was hid bad decision, and it led to another bad decision, and he's taking responsibility. He's giving context without shifting blame.

what I am going to say is not his fault but, its weird how I was in a 72 hour bender is some sort of damage control circumstance in his case. If a hip hop or Latin singer had been in a 72 hour bender the bender itself would have been used by people to call him drunk (insert slur here) and then comments about said cultures relationship with alcohol and drugs would follow

Sounds to me like he gave his explanation, but it wasnt an excuse. He knows he fucked up and hes owning it and taking responsibility. I dont think hes blaming the alcohol/drugs for what he did, just explaining that his lapse in judgement came from that and he himself is horrified that it happened. He was messed up and had a moment of weakness and after sobering up he saw that and didnt like what he saw, and knows he needs to change.

Id say it's an acceptable excuse if you stop drinking now. But if you're like "I make mistakes and bad decisions when I drink...but Im gonna keep drinking", you probably don't really care as much as you should. Words are useless. Show it by taking action and attacking the problem that you claim caused it.

And even if he did only say it while drunk that is no excuse. Maybe if he was singing along to a rap song, sure. But that is in no way what happened here and someone who blurts it out in the manner he did definitely thinks it and very well likely says it normally as well.

Alcohol is called "liquid courage" for a reason. If you say something shitty when you're drunk, that's not the alcohol making you have a shitty opinion or vernacular, it's the alcohol making them comfortable with shitty behavior and beliefs they already had.

No but why are those the only two options? Blaming his inebriation makes the apology a lot less sincere. Ive been on benders before and I never magically got racist as a result. I do believe he is sorry, more so because its affecting his career, but just going off that apology Im not going to give him credit for realizing he did wrong. He knew it was wrong from the start and is only sorry it became public.

Look, I'll respect your opinion if you respect mine. He seems like he knows he fucked up and instead of back peddling hes owning up to what he did.

implying he only said it because of the bender isnt owning up to it. Its like hes putting more emphasis on that. I wont make that mistake again so itll mean Ill never say the word again. Owning it would be admitting its a word he uses (because alcohol or drugs dont suddenly make you use new words that were never part of your vocabulary), and outlining how he plans to change and do better. Look I was drunk and made a mistake. Im sorry isnt exactly owning it. If this wasnt made public would he have felt guilty the next day after using the word? Highly doubt it.

That's your opinion and I respect it, but mine is different. I have done things drunk that I regretted really bad the next day because they're things I would never naturally do. To think alcohol and drugs only cause people to do things they wouldnt do otherwise is because it's their "honest self" is the same as saying we should be on drugs all the time so we're always our most honest self.

Drugs and alcohol make people make stupid choices; it's part of the reason people avoid them.

Yea. Drugs and alcohol can make you do things your clear mind might not do, but its not a magic elixir that changes who you are. The things you do and say are still your thoughts. You just dont have the impulse control while under the influence. It doesnt just suddenly make you racist and then not again when youre sober. It just prevents you from controlling those thoughts in public like you would sober.

so again, if he addressed it that way and pledged to change who he is, thats owning it and Id respect that. Trying to hide behind the shield of I know it was wrong but I was drunk doesnt get respect from me.

That fair, and completely fine. I never watched the video so I cant attest to HOW he said it, but it sounds to me like he said it in anger; and anger CAN very well make you say and think things you never would say/do otherwise.

Either way, you have your opinion and I have mine. I guess I sympathize with him a wee bit, but I would never condone that behavior either way. I just think hes doing the best he can to own it without committing literal career suicide.
